The 'oil level monitoring system unavailable' message popped up the other day. It went away and so far hasn't come back but in anticipation of failure of the sensor that's buried in the bowels of the engine, I was wondering about a way to check the oil level without the sensor. I found that a length of strimmer cord will pass fairly easily into the oil change suction pipe and into the oil in the sump. Next step is to calibrate the cord so that when it's a certain way into the pipe (a knot to line up with the top of the pipe) the normal level would be say an inch from the end of the cord. Maybe someone has already tried this or maybe it's a daft idea. .....Thoughts and suggestions on a postcard.......
