Oil leak after belt broke

2011 4.4 TDV8, I replaced the serpentine belt which either came off or broke and wrapped around fan pulley, had to remove fan shroud and fan, replaced tensioner pulley, whilst I had it apart I put a new alternator in, put it all back together and terrific started and ran fine, took it for a couple of short runs up to 3500 rpm to make sure all pipes sealed on properly, wife and I went shopping next day for a couple of hours bit of running around, got home went out later and found a lot of oil on the ground, lifted bonnet to find oil all over fan and front of engine, next morning when cold sprayed front of motor with degreaser and washed it off, left it to dry for a few hours then started it up, took about 5mins and noticed oil coming off a pulley I think? It looked like it was spraying into the lower area of first + fourth photo from somewhere and you can see it running down onto alternator bracket photo 3+2, any idea where it’s coming from and it’s only been leaking since the belt came off

Mine was replaced when they did the waterpump and aux belt and tensioners. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

As above, probably a piece of the old belt in there. Need to strip down and check and rectify ASAP, will get worse very quickly. Had a tdv6 in a discovery chuck its seal out, emptied the entire sump in minutes

Is this a common issue? I’m midway through changing my belts, pulleys, alternator, ac compressor and water pump. Do I need to consider this as a preventative measure? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I’ve not seen one leak without being damaged so it’s down to your own preference whether you change it, just wether you take the risk damaging the new seal on fitting and then having issues after

Yes more I drove worse it got, stripped it down and found a huge amount behind pulley like a birds nest, seal was badly damaged easy to remove, bit tricky getting the new one on without damaging it, I found if I had the key way at the bottom I could put seal onto key way first gently lifting then slipping it over the shaft, have also found crank pulley is wobbling which I never noticed my mechanic reckons that’s what started my problem, the wobble probably led to belt coming off, new pulley arriving Tuesday, refit and hopefully be alright then, will check and see if new seal is leaking and I didn’t damage it putting it on, Ffr-lover if your belt broke it may have gone behind pulley but it may not, need a strong rattle gun to get it off, I used a Milwaukee fuel 18. Check photo out of what was behind pulley

Blimey, that is quite a mess!

I think I am safe as my belt is only partially damaged and on the edge away from the engine. But will have a good look as I get into the engine behind the pulleys and pump.

I’ve loosened the tensioner and slipped the belt off, but you can see on the pulley next to it the slightly narrower belt. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Looks like you should be alright, motor side of belt is still intact, shed some light on your pulley take a photo like this one, I never noticed when I took photo, if you look in the top slot that is the belt behind pulley, just make sure yours doesn’t look like mine

I've got the oil leak after a pulley seized and the belt shredded round the fan...

How was the strip down? A big job? Wondering if it is worth doing myself or putting it into the local indy garage...

Rmac 73 hardest part of strip down was getting to all the bolts on the radiator shroud, made my own tool to hold the fan bolts whilst undoing fan bolt, you’ll need a huge breaker bar to get crank pulley bolt off, get a new bolt with pulley your supposed to take starter out and a special Landrover tool to hold toothed plate(forget what it’s called) but I just used a stubbie impact driver instead, didn’t have to take radiator out, I marked pulley with white paint stripe then just tightened it up gave it a rest then went again, give it a good go then mark side of bolt to match pulley and I used a small adjustable mirror to check it, so far it’s done 20,000 klms and hasn’t moved, make sure you use some Loctite on it. 2011 Voque 4.4 TDV8
