These cars are never boring, are they?

I was driving along the other day and I suddenly lost most of my drive. Well, the car did anyway. Couldn't reverse, forward was just crawling. No red warnings, just cruise control and forward alert disabled. Got the car recovered, turns out the front transfer box had dropped its oil all over the road and the driveshaft had popped out slightly - there's a C clip that retains the shaft in the box, apparently.

All fixed, on my way, sorted.

Then today, about 90 miles later, it's done it again.

You can't get the C clip on its own, apparently, it's on backorder with no estimated date. So I was thinking maybe replacing the shaft in its entirety might be the sensible thing to do.

But before I okay that, am I missing anything? Is there any chance there could be something else forcing the driveshaft out? I haven't hit any major potholes or anything of late.

I had the same problem, no idea why the shaft suddenly slipped out. At first I thought it was the gearbox, ZF fitted me with a new Servotronic (€3500.00) and didn't realise that the problem was the shaft not sitting properly in the differential. Then I went to another workshop and they fitted a new shaft, but in the meantime the clutch discs of the Transfer Box had been damaged. So a new Transfer Box was fitted.
The oil comes from the differential, not the Transfer Box! Be sure to check!

I hope it's not the transfer box! But I'll get it checked while it's in the garage, thanks for the tip!

If you did not drive to many miles with the driveshaft out it's not a problem. When this happend on mine the shaft allways went back in as soon as I slowed down to about 40 or so Km/h and I could go on but over time it was too much for the transfer box.

I could barely drive anywhere once it popped out, I had hardly any drive and I couldn't reverse at all until everything was cold again.
