UK L405 SDV8 Right Hand Turbo Replacement

Hi I'm about to set out and replace the variable turbo on the right. Research shows step 1 is remove engine. Does anyone have any tips or knowledge if the replacement can be done from underneath without removing the engine? Google is a bit light on info. 2015 SDV8 AB

Hi, I’m also looking for tips on the primary right hand turbo replacement for L494 2015 SDV8, possible without removing the engine? Did you manage this @PHG?

Hi, sorry I thought I’d reported back.
I did not change the primary in the end but it does look do able with engine in.
My turbo was misdiagnosed by experts as needing replacement.
If your car pulls ok with no smoke when codes are cleared there is a good chance you just need an actuator which it very hard to get but very easy to fit.
I used turbo vanes in the midlands but ended up doing the whole job twice due to poor QC.
Cost about £250 for the rebuilt part.

Thanks both for the replies,

Car is 2015 SDv8 L494 and has a noise under low rpm acceleration. Around the 1250 mark it makes a whirring noise which you can hear from the cabin. I suspect the right hand turbo, and only under load as reving car on the driveway doesn’t produce the same noise. I’ve performed a smoke leak test on the air intake side and that didn’t highlight any pipes leaking boost.

Laying under the car I can see the actuator move but I might need to do a bit more research checking it today. The car pulls ok, no smoke and no codes. Just this weird, ghost like whirring noise

Mines a l405 so no experience of turbo access on l494.
Your whistle could be a turbo required or could be an air leak.
Maybe worth a webuyanycar type solution if no warranty available.
