White smoke and leak

Evening all.

So I've done about 400miles in my new to me L322 v8 petrol (BMW).All was running well.

It's just been into the mechanics for a full service, rocker cover gaskets, auto box, diffs and transfer service. On the drive home, noticed excessive white smoke on hard acceleration there also seems to be a significant leak from somewhere (see pics).

Managed to make it the few miles home and temp gauge was normal. I've checked the oil and coolant levels and they seem OK. Mechanic has said he might be able to look at it on Monday but did have plans to use it tomorrow.

Has anyone got any ideas what the issue could be in the meantime.

Cheers

Excessive amounts of white smoke could indicate head gasket failure on the M62 engine, I had it on mine and was lucky that no harm was done, quickly replaced with new gaskets and a full service at the same time, this was back in March 2022 with 169k miles on the ODO

Thanks. Hoping that's not the case as seems too much of a coincidence that it started just after the work. I was wondering of the rocker gaskets haven't been seated properly. Can this cause the same issues?

do you have any bubbling in the radiator and or coolant reservoir ?

the cylinder head gasket also seals in the coolant and oil, you may see streaks of oil and coolant streaming down from the gasket, does your leak seem to consist of both oil and coolant mixed, is it a little milky to the eye

Doesn't look milky, to be honest I cam not sure what it it. Initially thought it was oil but doesn't seem to be leaving marks on the driveway where is has been leaking.

I didn't check the coolant and oil until after the car had been sat and cooled a bit so didn't see any bubbling.

It could be oil from the service burning off? Is it definitely leaking? How many miles since the service? Leaking from rockers could cause the white smoke - I’ve experienced it - but you’d normally smell the oil as well, burning on the manifold.

And if you need to use the car just keep a close eye on the temps and oil level. And carry coolant and oil with you just in case! That’s what I would do. And drive like miss daisy. 😉

Thanks. Fortunately, have another car I can use so the RR can wait until the mechanic has a chance to have a look.

Definitely seems to be a leak as could see dripping on the floor when I pulled over. Would seem to much to be residue.

Really hoping it's the the rocker gaskest needs re-seated - mechanic did say it was quite awkward on one side.

It wouldn’t surprise me, they seem to be tricky to seal on V8’s. I did the gaskets on a petrol v8 and one side sealed great and the other still leaks - I’ve lived with it for a couple of years as it’s not too bad.

Good luck 👍

Ta. That's what I'm leaning towards. Ironically, I think trying to replace the gaskets has made things worse.
