Transfer case strange behavior.

Hi all, since replacing the drive shaft I have had a problem with the transfer case. It shifts normally between high and low but IIDTool gives the following error message: P 2789-0 Clutch adaption learning at its limit. After switching off the engine you can hear the TC shifting.
I have made a short sound recording.



It's the "click" sound at the end of the video

Anyone with an idea what to do?
I have already calibrated the transfer case and clutch, without success.

I am grateful for any help and advice

On the search page, "search by author", look for RRPhil, he is the guru for all things gearbox Bow down , now retired, somewhere in the records will be the answer.
Sit down with a large glass of something and a notepad because it will take a bit of searching, and by the end of it you'll know everything there is to know about gearbox problems Thumbs Up

You would certainly expect recalibrating the clutch to fix this error. When you say “I have already calibrated the transfer case and clutch, without success.” I assume you mean that the recalibration process went as planned, it just didn’t fix the problem, rather than the calibration process failed?

Worn clutch plates could cause the issue, but it seems unlikely that simply changing a driveshaft could suddenly cause this.





I wonder if there’s an issue with the Hall effect position sensor in your shift motor?

Exactly, the calibration process went according to plan but did not fix the problem.
I'm going to remove the shift motor today to see if it could be the hall sensor. But the sensor is not available separately, right?

On the other hand; is it even worth the hassle to take the motor out if it's not repairable? Looking at it I think it will be a pain in the neck to loosen the bolts with almost no access to it.

I removed the engine anyway, didn't help but at least I could read the serial numbers and ordered a replacement. but I could only find it in the US, 60$ including postage doesn't sound too bad to me.

Let's see if the replacement fixes the problem.

The difference to all the others here I have no vibration, no stuttering, no idle fluctuations and the "mountain" symbol does not flash yellow but lights up green as it should.

Does the clutch calibration process using the IIDTool give any information on the clutch calibration angle value, at all?

No the IID Tool only has the posibility to calibrate the position sensor and calibrate the clutch but no information on angle and whatever.

Could this also be caused by a low oil level? The housing is a little oily/dirty at the top. Not much, there are no oil drops to be seen anywhere.

Another question for the specialists among you, can the solenoid (Transfer Box) simply be removed or is there a trick to it? I have loosened the screws but can't pull the solenoid out, it's somehow stuck. It can be pulled out about 2cm against a "spring pressure" and then it's done. I don't want to use excessive force for fear that something might break off inside.

Hi, it will come out with a bit of wiggling, the plastic fitting on the end needs to lift up out of the bracket / arm it fits in to.
To reinstall the solenoid needs to be energised by supplying 12v to the pins and it can then be relocated.
It’s probably easier to remove if energised as well but I’ve always managed to get them out.

Yes, that helps, thanks.
Now I have a question for our transfer case expert RRPhil; will a transfer case from an RRS or Disco work in the L322 as long as the donor vehicle had a ZF6HP26 gearbox? The part number LR049160 is not clearly specified for the L322.

LR049160 was used in the later L405, behind the 8-speed transmission. These are the part numbers for the L322 DD295 transfer cases:

Yes. Unfortunately, we don’t know what the differences are between all the different models of transfer case, so the only sure way of getting one that functions/fits correctly is to get one with the same part number as your own.

If it helps with the search, LR023011/LR023568 was also used in:

Range Rover Sport from 2011MY to 2013MY (VIN ending BA282520 to DA785480)
and
Discovery 4 from 2011MY to 2012MY (VIN ending BA56776 to CA649538)

Doing a little more research, I’ve come across several references online that state that LR049160 supersedes all earlier DD295 transfer cases. More work required to get to the bottom of this, I think.

Found a aftermarket box and the dealer sent me this listing of the superseded serial numbers. So I believe now that LR 049160 will fit my fatty.

In a couple of days I know more about
