Dead in the water L322 TDV8

Greetings!

I'm struggling with my beast which - without provocation - has suddenly decided that it is "Smart Key Not Found" time Sad And, before you ask, I do have two keys with fresh batteries.

The only thing that functions (apart from the instrument cluster, just to the point it displays that message) appears to be the interior lights. Let me be clear - I'm not expecting anyone to miraculously diagnose the cause of this remotely ... although I would be eternally grateful (etc) if someone did!

Currently it is sat in a fairly inaccessible hotel car park, and I've no hope of getting it recovered unless and until I can disable the steering lock. Obviously the EPB and getting it from PARK to NEUTRAL are no issue. But the steering lock ... oh my.

As far as I can tell, I have only the following options:

1. Get it fixed on site
2. Get it recovered to someone who will find and fix the fault
3. Leave it where it is until the planet's eco system recovered is as a pile of rust

Anyone have any ideas about the steering lock? Or perhaps the fault itself?

FWIW ... from the research I have done (and the fact that there is evidence of corrosion on the Park Assit module connectors), my hot favourite is that this is a CANBUS issue. But I have been wrong before.

All contributions welcome, but please be gentle with me ...

Try removing the battery lead for a minute or so. Nothing to lose, and You never know it may sort it.

Could this be a KVM fault? I believe it can happen where the KVM module fails due to age or water ingress. From my research on getting a second key for my l322 the KVM is easily removed and there are people who can fix and diagnose them. That would be an easy access job. The other thing it may be is the antennas for the Keys. From memory there are quite a few in the car, its in the manual. Is it possible this has failed or the electrical circuit for this system has failed? Current yokes

I'll give it a bash tomorrow; I did pull Fuse 5 (which in theory should do the same job) and that made no difference. But as you say, it's a zero cost thing and worth a go.

Well absolutely it could be. Trouble is I don't know where to find that.

I have a question about the KVM - is that the thing that the keys are paired with? I'll need to ponder how I can identify that as a possible cause of the issue.

Have you tried holding the key in the very specific position against the lower panel below the light switch then attempting to start? The owners manual has following instructions and a picture showing the key positioned below the light. The key may need to be moved about a little to get it to work.

Position the Smart Key against the underside of the fascia with the buttons facing downwards.

Greetings - I appreciate the input, but that doesn't change anything (with either of the keys I have).

My first Range Rover was 47 years ago - 3 door, plastic seats, twin carb V8. Had one ever since, moving up through the various builds.

If I knew then what I know now, I may well have bought something else ... but if its in the blood, you are clearly doomed ...

If you have "Smart Key Not Found" message, then at the very least you should try placing your key just below the light as per instructions shown above, not sure why you would not want to do that in your quest to troubleshoot the issue - please don't shoot the messenger Smile

Is there, by any chance a Construction crane with remote control nearby?
I had same problem once in Spain, the remote control interfered with the radio traffic of my key.
After I persuaded the crane operator Bow down to switch off the remote control for 5 minutes, I could start and take off again Whistle

Greetings.

No crane anywhere nearby, and I'm acutely aware of the possibility of interference / blocking of 433.92 MHz by "dirty" (in terms of spectral purity) licence-free low power devices; next time I am at the car I can easily verify that something somewhere isn't doing that - I have a weapons-grade spectrum analyser as part of my standard armament.

My next move is going to be a scope on the various BUS lines to see what I can see.

Thanks for the input!
