DIY Oil change on SDV8 reveals underfilled or burning lots

I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts on this.
SDV8. Full Land Rover SH until 2023.
Last dealership oil cooler work & oil change was 2023

Now the warranty has lapsed I decided to start maintenance. When expecting 9.4litres ish to drain from the sump I only got 3litres! Big Cry
Oil was warm and left to drain. (No significant engine oil leaks to speak of).
No low oil warnings on dash prior.

Things spring to mind.
Dealer forgot to refill after oil cooler work in 2023? or
No prior warning of low oil makes me wonder if the oil level sensor had already packed up in 2023 and the dealer thought they had refilled it? Or
Engine is burning a lot of oil and coupled to the sensor failure its not been noticed

Bottom line 13,000 miles with potentially just 3 litres of oil! (Should have been a 9.4L)

I will of course discuss this with the dealership who has always looked after my car and I have a good relationship with, but wanted to get some opinions on potential damage to the engine and how others would react to this.

Drained down from the sump plug.

Check to see if there is a blockage, could be a lot of carbon gunge etc do you have a boroscope?

Wow, that is a lot of oil. Unlikely to have used or leaked 6 litres I would have thought. I regularly check the oil in my cars so that I can establish how much is being used (if any) and how often it needs topping up.

That would have avoided your situation (I know, hindsight and all that). If you start doing that now at least you’ll know if it had used that amount of oil and it will give you some ammo against the dealer.

I would take it up with the dealer to start with, in case it has done some damage.

Didn’t drain down turbo reservoir. How much would be in there?

Re: checking oil, hasn’t ever used any oil between services, so either something dramatic has changed and it’s burning loads or it never had 9.4l in there.

Oil level sensor works and on refill (done in stages) it filled with nearly 9.2L.

The odd thing is there was never a low oil pressure warning, perhaps 3L is enough not to trigger this light? Does anyone know?

That you put in 9.2L to get to the correct level shows that you didn't just drain from the turbo reservoir drain plug.

Check the oil filter drain leaf spring is on it's post and not loose in the bottom of the filter housing.

I can't believe that you weren't having overheating issues or low oil pressure with only 3lt of oil in the system.

Something is awry here.

No oil in the cooling system.

No overheating. The spring was present and correct on the perch in the filter housing.

So all the basic possibles covered, lets hope its not the turbo's seals leaking etc burning the oil off.
