Help Needed: Whirring Noise

I had my L405 back into the dealer to try and rectify an annoying whirring noise. Its not noticeable at low speeds but from 30 onwards and especially on the motor way its extremely frustrating. Dealer have said its exhaust and tyres and common especially with 22's. I find it extremely hard to believe that everyone running around with 22's on are putting up with this as tyre noise. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks. Dan

All mine have had 22" wheels and never any other noise apart from normal tyre and road noise. Your dealer's having you on!

Where does the noise sound like it’s coming from (ours on 22” and no whirring)?

I had a similar problem with a Freelander I had, and the noise was down to tyre wear patterns.

The tyres had worn “castellated” so that the leading edge of each tread block had kindvof picked up so looked at from the side the tyres looked like a saw.

Unfortunately the vehicle was a company lease car and as the tyres were legal I couldn’t get them changed.

So your dealer might be right, have a look at how your tyres have worn.

Other than that can’t offer any ideas!

Mine also on 22's no issue with noise - agree you tyres are probably goosed - that's one of the reasons I rotate mine once a year.

What's the exhaust got to do with the tyres?

Test drive another - that will establish whether it’s ‘normal’ or not.

its possibly not the tyres...your description of the 'noise' needs to be more precise.. ... - .- -.

I had a Defender on Conti Cross tyres that started to whirr above about 50 mph. Really tiresome.

Completely fixed by putting on a set of BF Goodrich.

May not be your problem but don't rule out tyres.

Thanks for the replys. I have asked to test drive another. Noise is like a humming type sound which gets louder with speed. Tyres are all continental cross contact LX Sport and have done less than 5k. I picked the noise up on the test drive and was told it would be rectified before collection (9 weeks ago) I also had the service manager out in the car with me who said noise was noticeable to him from 30 mph and involved further investigation. Upon collecting I was told it was normal and related to tyres and exhaust noise (no idea how exhaust is related) noise is extremely frustrating, to the point I turn the radio up to prevent hearing it.

I would like to add there is a slight difference in the volume of the whining/humming subject to road service but always noticeable.

Try a different set of wheels and tyres?
If the dealer won’t help (I assume you are experiencing the magnificent customer service that Stratstones at the old glassworks are renowned for) I have a spare set of 20s off my L322 that you are welcome to borrow to prove the point. I’m not far from Newcastle

Try dropping your pressures 2psi, just put mine up 2psi too much and noticed a slight increase in road noise. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
