Transmission Overheating - Slow Down. But I’m hardly movin

Unexpected glitch today, and I’m wondering just how much I should worry.

I crawled in slow traffic virtually all the way from central London to Battersea (about 5 miles/ 40mins). Then as I was inching forward towards another set of perma-red lights, I had a bong plus the message in the thread title. I couldn’t really have slowed down without stopping, and having to get somewhere by a specific time, I carried on.

The message was gone in a couple of seconds. The car drove completely normally after the message, and the message didn’t re-appear. When I got to my destination, there was a slightly unfamiliar smell from the front end of the car. A kind of hot smell, but maybe that was me feeding my preconceptions. The car started fine after that and is still behaving.

The hot smell from the front end could have been the FBH and completely unrelated.

Given the year, I'd be minded to say it was one of the occasional glitches in the terrain response system, so I think monitor it for now and investigate if the fault returns.

When was the transmission fluid last changed?

I believe the fault can also be triggered by the transfer box, not just the ZF Transmission, so if the message appears again, I'd plug in diagnostics and start looking at live values. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

IIRC there is a thermostat that controls the gearbox oil cooler, these are known to fail, if you sit in traffic for an extended period with it failed then the oil can overheat and the car "presumes" you are driving too fast, the oil temp sender in the gearbox informs the ECU and gives you that message...

Replicate the trip and monitor live values for gearbox temp, can't remember exactly what it should be but if it gets to 100c then the oil will need changing after the problem is sorted. As Gary says it could just be a one off but this is a free and easy check...

All the info you need should be in the WM.... Thumbs Up Pete
