USB not recognising iPhone (or anything!)

I have a 2017 RR which I am slightly starting to regret buying as it seems riddled with gremlins.

So it has Apple Car Play and is on the latest software (S22A) but whenever I go to plug my iPhone in (or a wireless dongle even) I get 'Connect compatible device to USB port in centre console' warning and just doesn't register whatever is plugged in, now if I go and come back a bit later it MAY suddenly decide to work but its never consistent and NEVER works the first time I start the car in the morning - its like a handshake issue or something with the USB port.

I have tried multiple phones, cables and wireless dongles and the end result is the same - it's just really unreliable. This is a deal breaker for me if this is 'just how they are' and I will need to move the car on but I am really hoping that maybe other people have resolved this? It's a July 2017 AB. Any advice will be welcome![/img]

Everything works fine all the time in my MY2017 L405.
The centre console modules are known to fail, Google “L405 replace centre console USB module” and you should find some information on the “other forum” I thought I had read something similar on here before about this, but can’t find it, perhaps Stan or another can.
There are a few used examples for sale on eBay.

P.S. Not all Gremlins are bad Whistle “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thank you for the reply.

So yours works everytime you plug a phone into the USB? Mine is really REALLY flaky - most times it won't work and then suddenly it does.

I wonder if I bought a new one off eBay if it needs to be coded to the car or if it can just be swapped out?

I can’t imagine it needs coding to the car, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me like Phoenix can advise. Still not a cheap fix at £75-£100 used, so I’d wait for a bit more feedback here before you commit to it, there may be other advice, I’m no expert on this subject, just trying to help. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

It should just connect & work - it's just an interface / media converter.
Beware of buying used ones, they might be selling it because they had to buy a new one....
Also worth checking that there isn't any debris / muck in the socket first which could be blown out, I also recall a few of these had 'failed' due to the inserted plug having side pressure applied which causes the socket to partially break away, in turn, causing poor contact. The outer contacts are power and tend to have better contact, so quite often you'll get something to power up / charge but not make a data (centre pins) connection.

Thanks - I can see a new one for sale on ebay but I am a little unsure on how easy it is to remove the old one and replace with the new one - the unit feels like it would just pull out but I am assuming there is going to more to it than that.

Really don't want to take this to the dealer to do as it will be so much more costly

Thanks Phoenix.

Damian, it’s a DIY job, there is information on how to do it, I remember reading about it either on here or the American website, so worth a bit of digging, perhaps Stan can help, I’ll keep looking! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

It does just clip in - but - the harness doesn't have any slack in it to allow full access to the connectors, so you need to remove a few bits, about 20 mins from memory but it's been a few years since I changed one.

ETA - have a look under body & paint for 'Floor console upper section R&I' that will get you access to the connectors.

Thanks

I just need to find an 'idiots guide' on how to do it and the I think I may replace it as I have tried everything and it's so flaky and intermittent that it has to be worth a shot.

Hi Damian, this is what I had seen before, not identical but may give you some insight:

Hi - sorry for being stupid but what did you mean by this?

In the Workshop Manual - downloadable from the 'Wiki' link on the top right of the home webpage.
Look in the body & paint section for 'Floor console upper section remove & install'

He means in the WM (Workshop Manual) in the Wiki above.
R&I means “Removal & Installation”. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
