20mph speed zones, and DPF regens.

shout-out to you poor Welsh guys, with DPF's. where are you going to go to regenerate your full DPF? I mean, you need to be 30mph, and a decent long stretch of carriageway.
will the 20mph zones fill the dpf more quickly? im near to a few of these 20 zones, and one day, i'm sure the Greater London area will somehow get sucked into this... and it will be hard to get out of it to regerate the dpf!!! extra mileage, to get to a fast road, and back again.
holy-moly!

@JBA :

Rolling Eyes What? Don’t you know dear chap, most us FFRR peeps already have ones’ own rowling road at home for such instances? Laughing
Set away on ones’ driveway at full tilt for 20 mins, pop indoors for a cuppa, and its all over with dear boy!

Bit of a b*gger with fences etc if you get it wrong, though! Embarassed Whistle “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

its the heat generated that does the regen...

an hour at 20 mph might result in that.. ... - .- -.

Not had an issue with 20mph here in London other than finding a road where it's actualy possible to drive that fast.... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I think my brakes are generating more heat than my DPF, B.B. doesn’t like running at 20 mph, it’s much happier at 30.

jaygee, i feel your pain. periodically, i have to get out of town, to run my dpf full alarm. it takes about 20 -30 mins, but some parts of the carriageway get congested, so i have to have in mind the time of day. if i let it go red, im then restricted to 50mph and a sort of limp mode, car very sluggish. its not easy to guess the road ahead to maintain more than 30mph, to complete a dpf regen successfully. also, having ulez to pay, i have to do the regen on a day that ive already paid, and be back at home before midnight, ie go out in the evening to complete it. else another ulez day is charged.
in Wales, there will be way less fast roads to complete this with their new blanket 20mph zone.

yes heat into the dpf, ie injected diesel that burns off soot...requires a constant speed of over 30, engine up to normal temps, triggers the cycle. you also need more than 1/4 tank of fuel, else it won't.

Not sure Range Rovers (and other cars with DPFs) much liked the 30mph zones anyway (which are now 20mph). National speed limit I assume will apply elsewhere so unless I'm missing something this isn't a problem at all. I don't expect to do a regen whilst driving in built up areas or round the block thats what motorways are for Evil or Very Mad Geoff

I think you might struggle to find anywhere that you can drive at 20mph for an hour and if all you do is that sort of driving anyway you've probably got the wrong car, unless its a 5.0L supercharged (probably again the wrong car for driving in 20mph areas) Geoff

"The driver will be alerted to this condition by a message 'EXHAUST FILTER NEARLY FULL'. See 'HANDBOOK'. As detailed in the
Owners Handbook, the driver should drive the vehicle until the engine is at its normal operating temperature and then drive
for a further 20 minutes at speeds of not less than 30 mph (48 km/h). Successful regeneration of the DPF is indicated to the
driver by the 'EXHAUST FILTER NEARLY FULL' message no longer being displayed. If the DPF software detects that the DPF is
still blocked, the message will continue to be displayed or an additional message 'EXHAUST FILTER FULL VISIT DEALER' will
be displayed. The driver should take the vehicle to an authorized dealer to have the DPF force regenerated using an approved
diagnostic system."
Never seen a warning after 2 years living in London with 20mph zones all around me. Mind you I regularly drive long distances and don't use it for 'local transport'. If I did I'd buy a 5.0SC 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’ve had a regen fail after 15mins on a dual carriageway due to having to slow down to less than 30 to negotiate a roundabout in my early days of monitoring with the “Kot Kit” so defo it won’t happen at 20mph. Even dropping the speed for just a few seconds is enough to fail a regen.
On Sunday, my most recent regen lasted from Sunderland to Middlesborough (30 miles) so regens are not going to be successful in built-up areas. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I've had failed/interupted regens but it's always dropped the soot level down a bit as long as it's got to the stage in the process where the DPF gets to >600deg so it just starts again when the soot level rises back up to the trigger limit rather than starts again to get it down to minimum. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The proposed new law in Wales only applies to built up areas where there is a current 30mph limit. Practically you would be breaking the speed limit today if you needed to go above 30 to do a regen and that's not counting the fact that the engine has to be up to operating temps before hand which may or may not be the engine oil temp and not the coolant temp which lags way behind the latter. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Living in a city, my DPF used to fill occasionally and give me the amber warning to go and take it for a drive.

Aside from oil changes, cleaning the MAP sensor, replacing the exhaust temperature sensor, replacing the donut hoses and fixing the throttle body union seal, best piece of preventative maintenance you can do is drive to your choice or dual carriageway or motorway and drive for 20 miles at 50mph+ every week or so. This way it gives everything an opportunity to get nice and hot, break down deposits and prevent failed DPF regens (plus an excuse to find a nice country pub). 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
