United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Santorini Black
New Owner, A few questions

Hi All,

I have had a rocky start with my first ever Range Rover but hoping to finally start enjoying. It’s a 2012 4.4 TDV8 and I only have 1 key. I live near March in Cambridgeshire and am hoping someone can point me in the direction of a source for a replacement.

I have a few issues remaining but will start separate threads to keep it tidy and thanks in advance.

Cheers
Brian

You've got several options for a 2nd key.

First option, search Google for a good mobile auto locksmith. Look for photos of all kinds of modern keys. They can create you a new one and cut the blade for about £250. It takes them about 15 minutes.

Second option, you can order a GAP IID tool (which will probably serve you well during your RR ownership, and they have good resale value if you decide to sell up). You can buy a key with unprogrammed chip on Amazon/ebay for £90 and the GAP IID tool will programme it for you. Then all you'd need to do is either order an emergency key blade from Land Rover (about £35) or head into a local locksmith with the blade and get them to cut you a second (about £15-20). There's also a company on ebay who you can send a photo of the blade to and they'll cut it remotely and send to you. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Can anyone recommend a good place to buy the gap tool and which version I should buy please?

The interior looks almost unused but the drivers seat squeaks dreadfully which I would like to sort. I am hoping it’s not too difficult to partially remove the covers allowing me to lubricate. Has anyone else done this?

I have a belt type squeal (low level) that lasts for the first minute or so and then disappears. It’s definitely a tensioner or belt unless the alternator or starter motor are known culprits. I doubt it’s either of these based on the noise, past experience plus the starter was replaced 2 years ago.

I have the oil smell after driving but the engine bay is super clean and no drips under the car. The front diff housing does have some oil marks on it coming from what could be the engine but it doesn’t reach the bottom of the housing and no drips. A specialist replaced the oil cooler and EGR gaskets about 10000 miles ago but can’t see any receipt for the oil cooler pipe o rings that I have read so much about. I would like to replace these and see if it makes a difference.

I am fairly certain the car is about as clean as absolutely possible for a L322, you would struggle to find a cleaner example so I want to make sure it’s 100%.

Regards,

Bells Auto Services for the GAP tool.

For the tensioner/pulley squeak, you could try spraying a little water or 3 in 1 oil on each, or use a mechanic stethoscope until you find the culprit.

For your seat, do you mean the seat springs squeak or the motor mechanism? If you raise the seat on the motor, there's enough space underneath to spray some grease at the offending motor mechanism / spring.

In terms of the smell of oil, there's 2 common oil leaks on this engine. 1. The oil cooler o-rings and 2. The oil feed hoses. The oil cooler o-rings leak to the cooling system and result in oil in the expansion tank, and also through and then down the V. The oil feed hoses drip from the back of the engine onto the bell housing. Because the drip is generally quite small and the bell housing large, the oil soaks the bell housing and burns off there, so the bell housing can appear dark in colouration. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hi Gary, your description of the oil on the bell housing is spot on so thanks, this is where I will focus. I will of course check the coolant also. I had a local landrover specialist tell me the oil stain on the housing was due to a known casting problem and that I should leave it as a very expensive fix. Another specialist who were absolute cowboys and had the car for 2 months told me not to worry about it. They also told me I needed new turbos when in fact I just needed a new actuator on the secondary turbo.

I am not sure RE the seat noise but will start as suggested by raising the seat and see how I get on.

Thanks RE Gap tool.

If you have oil soaked into the bell housing, I'd be looking at the oil feed pipes.

If you remove the plenum, either put a mirror or a phone on record down the back of the engine, and you'll see the two oil feed hoses.

The o-rings on them are known to fail - simple fix if so.

There's lots on this thread and photos of people doing the o-rings on the oil feed hoses: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic35977.html 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

If I raise the seat as suggested to its highest position and spray lubricant in an attempt to remove the squeaking is there a particular type of spray that works best? Also any areas I shouldn’t spray?

I have a really good make interior assembly spray which is silicone free, I have silicone based spray and your normal WD40/GT40 type sprays. What would be best please?

Don't spray oil on or near the belts as it will cause more squeal. Spray the belt with water and if the noise goes away the belt is worn/ contaminated or the tensioner has gone weak and needs replacing but you may as well then replace the whole lot ( pulleys as well) as the biggest part of the job is removing the fan and shroud for access. While you are at it look at replacing other items this gains easy access to like the AC compressor, alternator and water pump. For a temporary fix put talc on the belt but it's just putting off the inevitable which worsens the colder the mornings get. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
