2012 L322 ICE having a hissy fit

Hi all. My first post here so please be gentle! Smile

I have a 2012 L322 TDV8 with dual view screen ICE and surround camera system (this may be relevant later on). About 6 months ago, the entire ICE system suddenly failed. It had occasionally frozen for short periods when playing a song connected to the aux port, or one of the cameras had played up a few times, but these had always restarted after a few seconds or after switching the engine off and back on again. This failure was nothing like it; it completely refused to start up, the screen was stuck at the "Range Rover" start up screen and nothing happened. I did a bit of googling, came across the bluetooth bypass solution on this forum, my homemade attempt failed, but before I could buy a proper bypass widget, the thing miraculously came back to life after a few days, and I forgot all about it.

Fast forward to a couple of months ago and the same happen again with no warning - sudden and complete failure of the system. However, this time it refuses to come back to life even though it's shown a few glimpses of activity. In the meantime, I bought a proper bluetooth bypass widget and tried both the widget and a DIY bluetooth bypass but neither of the bypasses helped. It's interesting to note that my phone would actually tell me that it's connected to the car's bluetooth system and would try to direct calls etc through the car but obviously no sound came through.

After the first week or so of being solely stuck on the Range Rover start up page, the system, on some occasions, started to partially boot and be functional with some bizarre issues as below.

This is what the screen looks like most of the time with the orange light flashing on and off. This can carry on for hours on a long journey, and never go away for days on end, or it can disappear a few seconds after the engine starts.




When in this mode, nothing works; pressing the Phone, Home Menu, Navigation, or any of the other physical buttons has absolutely no effect what-so-ever.

This is the screen I get if the ICE ever gets past the start up screen above. Note that the "Cameras" option is greyed out and isn't available to choose.


If and when it gets to this stage, both the physical buttons and the touchscreen menu buttons work so I can get to the navigation or the phone screens, for example, but not the cameras screen. Previously, I would've been able to see the live streams from the 5 cameras, zoom in etc. when I went into the cameras menu. Related to this, whatever the ICE screen shows, when I put the car in reverse, the rear view camera doesn't come on and I get an error message on the dashboard.

This is what I get when in the Phone screen, bearing in mind that this is while my phone is telling me that it's connected to the car's bluetooth!


In the Audio Video screen, I get the following two screens flashing alternately without the ability to choose anything on the touchscreen, the radio memory is blank, nothing plays through aux etc.



Other foibles include being able to set the time but not the date so the car thinks its 2009 and will not accept it's 2022, but it's ok with me changing the time alone. I can't set the timed climate because whatever is preventing me from being able to set the date seems to be interfering with the date setting controlling that too, but the navigation works fine within the limits of the 2011 map, and the 4x4 settings menu works fine as well.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's going on. There doesn't seem to be any water or moisture in, on or around the bluetooth and related electrical gubbins in the rear, bluetooth bypass has done nothing and I would like to have a functioning system, possibly before installing (or rather getting someone else to install) a Naviplus unit. Would anyone have any ideas as to what to do next please? Do bear in mind that attempting a DIY bluetooth bypass was probably the pinnacle of my capabilities so anything more complicated than that and I'll (happily, I might add!) need to pay someone else to do it for me. I'm in Northamptonshire, close to Leicestershire border, and I don't mind travelling a little to take the car to someone knowledgeable who can sort this out.

Might be worth trying a hard reset via battery disconnect. There is a process which I can't remember right this second but it's something like remove both terminals off battery once it's gone to sleep. That's great, thank you. I've already tried the bluetooth bypass without success, both the DIY method in the wiki and using the bypass gadget also from a link in the wiki.

How do I do the battery reset please, is it just a matter of disconnect, leave it disconnected for a bit then reconnect?

Disconnect both leads from the battery and short them together for a few mins, to drain any lingering power in the countless ECUs, etc. Be careful what you’re doing with the removed +ve lead (I.e keep away from shorting against body or engine components). 👍🏻 L405 2017 TDV6 AB

The phone pair message and empty radio frequencies are only indications that the system has reset.

Due to the camera system fault I would try disconnecting the surround camera feed from the surround camera module because its easy to get to, being located under the left front seat. However a fault with that module should just show as a surround camera fault, not upset the whole system.

I've spent this morning doing all of these. I've done the battery reset as Stan suggested but it hasn't made any difference at all unfortunately. Sad Even though I had already tried it, I repeated the BT bypass having done the battery reset, just in case it worked this time, but still nothing.

I then managed to locate the surround camera module and disconnected the camera feeds, and even the module itself, but still no change.

I noticed a couple of other things while playing with the system though:

1) The information displayed on the 4x4 information screen is completely wrong. It comes up as standard height, high ratio, gearbox in Park, steering pointing straight ahead, but if you do anything, it doesn't change or update. The reason I hadn't noticed before was when I checked it, those were correct, and if you raise the height, or go into special programs etc, the dashboard display shows the correct settings, steering angle etc. but, as it turns out, not the ICE screen.

2) Although my phone said it had connected to the Bluetooth, I wondered what would happen if I tried pairing it again so I deleted the LR Bluetooth connection from my phone. Now, when I try to pair it, it can't find it. However, I still have my old phone which is still paired with it. When I turn that on, that one says it's connected pretty much straight away.

Is there a final common system receiver/unit/CPU/ECU that could interfere with/be unable to process data from all of these systems?

Right, having spent a bit of time reading that, am I correct in thinking that the touch screen display unit acts as the central computer for the whole system and isn't simply a display screen, and that in all likelihood, the one in mine isn't quite dead, but has severe Alzheimer's so I need a new one?

Before you rush off to buy a new screen, I had very similar symptoms with my old 58-plate TDV8. I guessed, like you, that the screen was at fault. I bought a new one and spent many hours pulling the car apart to replace it. Once it was all back together, I discovered that all the symptoms persisted. There was nothing wrong with my old screen which is now sitting in 'stock' with lots of other bits and pieces.

I eventually narrowed the fault down to the amplifier unit in the boot. This was replaced and everything began to work as it should again. However, despite the fact that the symptoms were caused by a fault with the amplifier, the real fault was actually water getting into the boot area and killing the amp.

I'm worried if a 12-plate has the same issues appearing, as I'm now driving a 12-plate myself..... The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Apologies for taking a long time to get back but things have been a little busy.

I finally got my local Land Rover specialist to check the entire system, and they managed to trace the fault. The prize for the correct diagnosis goes to...

Absolutely spot on, down to the last detail; rogered amplifier as a result of water ingress! New amp has been installed and everything is now back to normal.

I have exactly the same problem!!Have you found the source of water getting into the boot?Can one just replace the amp or must the amp be paired with the unit?I want to get a used amp but not sure it will work without pairing?How easy/difficult to remove the amp?

Actually, I do hate it on this occasion because this means that my 2012 could go the same way as my previous Vogue.
