Name That Noise

Afternoon All,

I’ve been aware of an unusual noise that is noticeable inside the cabin of my 4.4 Tdv8. I’ve uploaded a video of the noise to YouTube - see link below:

https://youtube.com/shorts/V95YUAna6Ik?feature=share

It sounds like a grinding and whirring noise to me, so thinking one of the drive or prop shafts. At first, I thought it was a wheel bearing, but they’ve all been checked and appear okay.

It is more noticeable between 10mph and 30mph. Above that, it is downed out by road and wind noise. Also louder when lifting off the accelerator.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what they think it might be?

i have a similar noise, but quieter... from the off, and more noticable when cold, a slight droning... (car on 200,000.. tdv8 2012 4.4) i sort of hear it from the carpet on passenger floor. and when coming off pedal and back on, it changes. i thought (hoped!) it could be a nearside hub bearing, and changed that and the driveshaft, and its still same. so i fathomed that my front diff is the culprit. i did source a S/H front diff. (correct ration for 4.4 tdv8) but am yet to fit it, as the weather is not favourable yet, and my reserve car is getting some attention at present. i will post up a vid soon.

cant tell from the vid how fast you were going.

As my noise was similar to the OP’s sound, I thought I would comment on my success story… I had thought I had a front diff noise, that had a slight tone change coming off the pedal, and back on when cruising.. I saw another post (can’t remember the title) and the guy changed the rear prop shaft as his centre bearing was bad…. So I looked at mine, it was indeed bad.. it was detached around the rubber mounting… but worse than that, there was slack on both ends CV joint. Slight clunking play when twisted from under the car.. I read that changing the whole prop was the way to go, on Pete Haylands advice, and put a new rear prop shaft on, and presto, it’s now a silent drive…. 6 bolts at each end, two for the centre bearing, and a tin shield off… and it was out, and back in. So pleased!

no, not that brand .. i found a new one on eBay, that was never fitted by seller, for reasons unknown... and made by GKN, which is a company ive heard of, that makes bearing parts. so trusted the branding. price was same as an advanced auto factors price, but had been discounted to match it. on inspection my centre bearing was toast, and probably the main cause, but the two CV joints both had slack in them, which was quite audible 'clacking' when twisted.... i figured it was a worthwhile job to change out the whole thing. the CV joints are sliding type UJ's, so might only have play in a certain position when bolted in, but not evident when its on the floor.

can't believe how quiet the driving experience is now... amazing what you get used to....
