As my noise was similar to the OP’s sound, I thought I would comment on my success story… I had thought I had a front diff noise, that had a slight tone change coming off the pedal, and back on when cruising.. I saw another post (can’t remember the title) and the guy changed the rear prop shaft as his centre bearing was bad…. So I looked at mine, it was indeed bad.. it was detached around the rubber mounting… but worse than that, there was slack on both ends CV joint. Slight clunking play when twisted from under the car.. I read that changing the whole prop was the way to go, on Pete Haylands advice, and put a new rear prop shaft on, and presto, it’s now a silent drive…. 6 bolts at each end, two for the centre bearing, and a tin shield off… and it was out, and back in. So pleased! |

no, not that brand .. i found a new one on eBay, that was never fitted by seller, for reasons unknown... and made by GKN, which is a company ive heard of, that makes bearing parts. so trusted the branding. price was same as an advanced auto factors price, but had been discounted to match it. on inspection my centre bearing was toast, and probably the main cause, but the two CV joints both had slack in them, which was quite audible 'clacking' when twisted.... i figured it was a worthwhile job to change out the whole thing. the CV joints are sliding type UJ's, so might only have play in a certain position when bolted in, but not evident when its on the floor.
