L322 3.6 tdv8 EGR and Injector

Hi all,

first post here, as I am facing a bit of a dilemma. My 200k km 2007 L322 3.6 TDV8 started going into limp mode (engine system fault) during a recent trip to Spain usually after 3h+ motorway. Restart and problem fixed, but still had it diagnosed in Spain. What it spit out were the P132B-21/22 codes so I figured we are probably talking split hose or stuck turbo actuator.

However, on my way back in France, after fueling up, it went straight to engine system fault, and after a few unsuccessful restarts engine check light came on.
Now the car is recovered, on startup blows out white smoke and I have the following additional codes on the left bank.
P045D - EGR valve B - left hand EGR control high
P007F - Charge air temp sensor left and right bank correlation
P0284 - Cyl. 8 Contribution/Balance - Incector
P2453 - Diesel Particulate Filter

I am a bit at a loss as to what exactly happened, the workshop is assuming the EGR blew and had coolant ingress.

Now the big question is, how much damage was done by that down the line and is it worth starting the long journey of fixing it. We got the car relatively cheap and aside from the technical issues it is in mint condition. We grew quite attached to the car so it´s a bit of a tough nut.

Any support in which error mode could be indicated and if you would recommend going ahead to fix it would be appreciated!

Also if anyone can recommend good workshops in southern Germany or north of Switzerland would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,

Martin

EGR disintegration can take out the turbo and worse if bits get ingested into the engine. It's a particular weakness with these engines unfortunately. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

From the fault codes, they sort of suggest several underlying issues.

I'd probably suggest asking a garage to perform a leak-off test or to remove the injector and inspect both the cylinder with a boroscope and the injector itself.

The other thing obviously is to inspect the EGR (about 6 hours to get to and remove, plus refit). The fault code suggests it could be jammed, or the electronic tracks on the actuator inside the EGR have failed.

I think I'd call a Land Rover specialist or pay for a few hours diagnosis, before setting down any particular route. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks guys! Much appreciated! I will see if I can get a reasonable diagnosis and keep you posted

Quick update here, currently waiting for initial repairs. Bought and refurbished both sides EGR valves and an injector (all used parts) and hope that will get the car moving again.
Subsequently I´d be looking for someone who can do a full overhaul on the engine.
Anyone has recommendation for a workshop that specializes in this(location doesn´t matter that much)?
Cheers

edit: if the place can also provide gearbox revision it´d be a big plus

So in the end found a qualified and affordable mechanic to start proper diagnosis, which after initial tests resulted in the engine being taken out of the car entirely.

What we know so far is the following:
- Injectors are ok (not great, but also not at fault for the defect)
- airflow and temperature sensors gone and replaced
- the bay with cylinder 8 on it is coked up and the car has been smelling like burning oil/diesel
- there is a coolant leak
- cylinder 8 has low compression

From endoscopic inspection it doesn´t look like there is any damage in cylinder 8, however might just not be visible. Next step before taking off the cylinder head would be to inspect the timing chain.

Do you think the timing chain could be the issue here? Any alternative best guesses?

Thanks a lot for the support!
