Take the driveshaft out, do it on the bench. Clean the boot and the clamping surfaces - also make sure the inner is in the notch, not beyond it. I've never had an OEM or good quality aftermarket boot come off if positioned & clamped correctly. Don't bother trying to re-use the clamping rings, once they've been fitted, they're not able to be refitted with the same holding force. |

First time round, I had the driveshafts on the bench and was quite sure I had them on on good. I can’t get clips on their own so will have to go for another gaiter kit and strip down again. |

Make sure there is absolutely no grease under the boot where the clamping rings go, that will cause it to work loose fairly quickly. Have a look for GKN kits, a bit cheaper than LR, they're the OEM so will be the same quality. |

It was the GKN kit i used, i was a bit liberal with the grease though. i will do again and take better care. Thanks for the advise. |

You also need pliers capable of applying some force, these are similar to mine, they have a compound action. If yours are the single action short handled ones, you might need to use a big pair of grips to pull them fully closed.

Yes, they do look better than my ones and I did have to put a lot of pressure on them, Allright for normal motors i suppose. |

I had an absolute nightmare with mine, big end outer on front shaft, kept popping off after the monkey replaced it after burning through it with a blow torch, in the end, after going through lots of the proper clamps, getting covered in that black grease each time, I resorted to using a big jubilee clip, been on now for about 8 months and no issue, not ideal but it works... |

Yes, i can see that working, might do that for now and put on the todo list to sort later. I suspect that the cv's will need changing now as i did drive them a while before i had found out the boot had come off. |

CV joints are pretty resilient, if it's not clicking on full lock and/or offroad height, it'll likely be fine for many thousands of miles yet. If you have the direct action pliers, then just use a big pair of grips to pull them closed. Jubilee clips are generally wider than the groove in the CV boot, and unless the stainless steel variants, won't put enough clamping force on the boot to make a permanent repair. Cleanliness of the mating surfaces is key to a 'right first time' repair though. |
