Sat Nav Map upgrade

Well I have succumbed to the temptation and bought a map up date (NOT OFF EBAY) from a UK company selling sat nav updates via download or by usb stick. They guided me through downloading, opening via Zip and putting on to a 32gb USB stick. On receipt of my Vin number, have supplied me a code to make it operational.

Only problem is...it takes 3 hours of your engine running to download it on to the vehicle. You can't just pop a charger on to the battery and do it because the ignition times out and shuts down.
This is why I don't believe that man walked on the moon !
Would you leave an engine running for 3 hours , obviously somewhere secure.?

Charger on, drivers door & bonnet not latched, ignition will stay on. In any case, it will resume when the ignition is back on, as noted above.
Just make sure all other consumers (lights, HVAC etc.) are off to give your charger a chance of keeping the voltage above the power save threshold.

@DaveK:

Useful if you can add your vehicle to your profile to get better model-related advice?

Phoenix is right, but where did you hear 3 hours? Assuming L405, my MY2017 usually takes 15-30 minutes on a drive depending on the size of the update. The only time I had a lot of issues with uploads was with a weak battery, causing updates to take a long time then fail. I suggest you check the system voltage if this is the case. (A healthy battery not connected to the vehicle should ideally put out around 12.6V). As soon as I replaced my battery, all of the problems vanished. Since then, I have been able to upload on the drive with CTEK charger attached, engine off ignition on, simply pushing the start button again if the shutdown sequence commences. (Thank you Pheonix, next time I’ll unlatch the bonnet too! Bow down Embarassed ).

Best of luck getting it sorted Dave, report back and we’ll try to help further Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I have recently updated my sat maps. I ordered a USB stick from the supplier as I read about people having issues with the download. I know the USB has to formatted a certain way for it to work. I would contact the supplier and ask for a USB stick.

Hi Dave,

If the car recognised the stick, it’s not a formatting issue.
Your description of the problem is almost identical to what I had, which was two issues at the same time, therefore very difficult to diagnose, namely weak battery and corrupted download.
The faster the internet connection the better, if it takes hours there is a higher chance of file corruption.

So, check your resting battery voltage (disconnected from the vehicle).
Do the download again, and allow the Here downloader software to reformat the stick if it wants.

Rinse & repeat. Good luck!
FWIW, I had repeated failures with one issue of the maps, despite multiple downloads and upload attempts.
Then I changed the battery and a new map issue became available, this downloaded in half the time, and uploaded to the vehicle in 15-20 minutes, using the exact same 64Gb USB stick. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Brand new batt on vehicle, Ran the engine and had batt charger hooked up.Ive asked them to send me a usb stick with it already on. If that fails to work then it's refund time but of course, I'll be left with out LR's built in Sat nav because that is now corrupted by my attempts to load the new maps.
