Right I’m in a situation where I’m trying to find a knocking from the rear of the beast. So basically it’s had new bushings on the hubs a new rear propshaft as the donut had gone and was just rolling around but I’m getting a noise now that sounds like the rear donut had gone but it hasn’t it’s brand new. The noise is like thump thump thump thump when pulling away not always though. Then as slowing down then speed up again you get that thump noise. I know the rear shocks on the way out to doing them tomorrow. But everything is tight nothing loose….any help would be appreciated thanks

So replaced the shocks with bilstein ones and as before the ride is still lumpy and knocking noise still there has improved slightly but not much. Still getting the thumping noise from dead stop then driving off. Still a problem any help?

Have a similar clunk from the rear suspension, think its more noticeable from the rear left. And maybe also a harshness to the rear suspension in general.

Recent service pointed out - which I already knew and hoped would solve the problem - pads were worn and replaced with new. But still - knock knock. Bushings came back with a clean bill of health from inspection during service. Suggestion from indy might be the driveshaft on its way out, i find this a strange comment, but what do i know.

For me knocking is most noticeable at slow speeds and .... 1) Downhill and braking. 2) Short sharp bumps. 3) Sometimes coming to a dead stop with the car rocking back. 2011 Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

He is referring to the centre propshaft bearing, on a lot of older cars it's a donut, on the fatty it's a bearing...  Pete

Hey deejay with how you have described it is almost exactly what I’ve got now although it will happen sometimes then nothing. So I’m guessing it must be coming from the rear passenger driveshaft considering I’ve changed the rear propshaft and the donut so can’t be that. But I’ve jacked up the rear wheels and spun the tyres and didn’t get any knocking noise

Did you end up fixing this problem? What did it end up being?

I have the same/simalar issue that i'm currently chasing....... Like a weird thudding noise at very low speed in time with the wheel rotation. Does it more when pulling away on a very light incline.

The car needed some love so i fitted new brakes, new Prop shaft, new hub spherical bushes (upper and lower), and did a full service (inc Gearbox and diffs). I bought all the fluids and filters from a main dealer.

So i'm doing some reading up........ i had a crawl under it and checked the engine mounts and rear rubber bushes etc the gearbox bush seems a little soft but i guess they are going to be a bit compliant on a Range Rover. There doesn't seem to be any play in the wheel bearings and there is no play in the half shafts although there is a bit of play in the front and rear diffs (but no more than you would expect from a 100k L322). Tires have about 5mm on the rears and about 6mm on the front and fairly consistent side to side.

I'm toying with the idea of unclipping the cv boots and checking to see if they still have grease in (bit of a long shot).

Any suggestions would be really good right now as i'm running out of things to look at.

I have actually read that and although they are getting a bit low all around they are worn the same side to side and about 1mm difference front to back. I did check the tire pressures too, cold they were all 32psi (it did cross my mind that i might have a puncture and it was a nail or something but the noise is more of a thud than a metallic tap).

The main problem is we can't point to a place the noise is coming from, three different people think it's coming from three different places

Those tyre pressures you refer to are not correct.

The correct numbers should be on the door pillar or the door itself and front and rear are different.

Yes, it currently doesn't have the spare in the back. I have tried 33 front and 36 rear but it made no difference, i have always put 33 in all four and after 14 years running this thing it's only started making the noise 3 weeks ago, but i will put 36 back in it just to eliminate it.

The thing that makes me think it's a Cv or something like that is it gets worse with heat, cold the noise is barely noticeable but after a 10 mile run it feels like something is going to fall off.......... I did think it might have been an egg in the tire or tread delamination but i had a good look at them when the brakes were done, i couldn't see anything and i had the wheel balanced to see if it might have been some thing internal or a bad rim etc.
