United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Santorini Black

Hi guys I was told the garage that was replacing the oil cooler that the connector had broken that goes into the thermostat housing very common for these to break could not get the part you are on about or the just the pipe either so we ordered a different part cost £10 and took the connector off the end job job. I have not been losing any coolant so doubt that the intermittent smoke and fumes I am still getting is related to anything coolant so check with the garage that has your car and ask them to replace the connector as you don't need the whole housing or the pipes that sit on top of the thermostat housing. I have spoken to a number of companies who are now thinking of having this crappy connector manufactured on its own as its this that perishes causing the issue.
Cheers

Glad to hear you got it sorted Jay, an independent solution is often the best way.

Mine is under LR extended warranty, common sense says take the RR away, but I'll wait until the job is completed now as the coolant loss could be a whole can of worms based on what I have now seen, which I'm told applies to all SDV8's.

Here is hoping the parts come in soon! Confused

Out of interest are you still running the RR as a daily? Any issues cropping up (beyond topping up).

Hi Geo I am running it daily yes about 50 miles a day so obviously the smoke and fumes I am still getting can not be related to excess oil still burning off from oil cooler change as this should of all well burnt off by now. I am not losing any coolant so we have no idea where the smoke is coming from and its intermittent which is the annoying thing! Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

Agree it’s the intermittent stuff that is most tricky. Good luck sorting it.

Explored every avenue trying to get to bottom of this intermittent smoke at back of engine and fumes oil cooler changed o rings changed at turbo feed pipe all pipes checked around donut jubilee clips all good no split pipes etc... any more ideas anybody. We did notice a small amount of oil around turbo nothing major possibly an oil leak from turbo could be culprit when its hot causing smoke fumes.
Cheers

Same situation as @jaysta10k

Hey Jay,

Were you able to have it resolved? What was it?
I have the identical problem as you. It all started a few days after an oil change at the Land Rover service shop. Forceful white smoke coming from around the rear of the engine and until the oil filter section. Had the oil cooler replaced as apparently that was the issue. Nothing changed, same smoke.
Could it be that the technician put too much oil in the oil change ant its leaking from some over flow tube onto some part of the hot engine? Could it be an overflow of turbo oil also leaking onto come part of the engine?
I had the entire engine cleaned with degreasing soap and had the car lifted up without the skirts and also cleaned with degreaser soap and a pressure washers trying to spray in all possible cavities between engine parts. After 4 days same smokey situation.
Any help?

How is your coolant level, is it staying stable or has it dropped? Current yokes

Well its been in for the typical oil change and I have not checked since. But the smoke is more of a burnt oil smelling smoke. What ideas do you have about the coolant? Also the smoke comes from the part of the engine that is against the firewall, are there any coolant lines back there?

Hi this really is a strange one I had no more smoke and fumes due months then suddenly got that dreaded smell on cabin again don’t know whether it was a coincidence but I’m sure the car was doing a DPF regen so I am now going down this avenue of investigation. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

But if it smokes that often, every few rides or every ride is it normal to do a DPF regen that often too?
Also, how could the DPF regen generate that smoke in that area of the engine?

Jay,

Have you checked the rocker gaskets? My V8 Merc leaks and I get similar symptoms to yours.

When I had my leaking oil cooler replaced, straight after and quite randomly there would be mysterious plumes of grey smoke appear out from under the bonnet. It didn't seem to be related to engine incline or even movement, I was sat at the lights and a lot of grey smoke belched out around the bonnet.

The Independent who fitted the cooler said it is impossible to get all the oil spilled when changing the cooler off the top of the engine so it'd work its way out eventually. After 3 weeks, there were no more grey plumes.
