Considering a 4.4TDV8

I’ve owned our 2003 TD6 for about 13 years now, aside from the usual age related jobs (new gearbox, front air suspension etc) it’s not been overly unreliable. It’s just tired, sluggish and feels old.

Have seen the prices of 2010-2012 tdv8’s and am seriously considering a long overdue upgrade.

What should I look out for? Any common faults or niggles? What’s real mpg? And what potentially expensive repairs should I plan for?
Ideally a budget of £13k to £14k.

And will I be better to PX my TD6 or sell privately? Only asking as I can’t imagine there’s much demand for a 20 year old Range Rover Big Cry

I know exactly how you feel, I had a 2004 V8 BMW Petrol - great car - still have it - but when I drove my brothers TDV8 back in 2019 it was a revelation, so I was really determined to find a nice 2011 or 2012 TDV8 4.4 during covid ( was not easy but patience prevailed)

Finally found one and can honestly say it's bloody great, does everything really well and I wish I did it sooner rather than stupidly carrying on with the 04 car Smile

MrB

There's a warts and all L322 purchasing guide in the Wiki. You probably know most of the things to look out for in terms of condition, service levels and documentation of same, corrosion of rear arches and tailgate, bushes etc., checking all the electrical goodies work and so on.

I've has mine for about 5 1/2 years now, it's my first Range Rover and I love it. Pleased to say it has been reliable for me so far with a few faults, all of which "they all suffer from" on here. (that statement will come back to haunt me Sad ) Most seem to be well within the scope of a handy tool spinner.

Comfort is excellent, acceleration is licence shredding if not careful.

I'll drop you a PM in a few. Cheers
Richard

Main issue is the second turbo fouling with oil. They don’t all do it! Some have had the turbo drain mod done others don’t seem to suffer from it. Quick check is to rev it over 2,500 revs and look in the mirror! 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

Make sure the oil cooler isn’t leaking oil into the V and down the back of the engine, and that there isn’t any oil in the coolant header tank, as can also be an indication.

As above, might smoke a bit when you first give it the beans but that may be as it’s stood about a bit or just been shunted around the forecourt. Should clear after that.

Mines never needed the drain mod, but others have needed it.

Most of the other bits are same as for any L322.

I went from a TD6 to 4.4TDV8 and it’s like having a totally different car, but with the same body on.

No common catastrophic fail items on the 4.4 but there are a number of common peripheral items which will cost a lot of ££ if they all go at once. These later models are still old cars with complicated operating systems and built in the UK so with your budget I'd spend £10k on the car and hold the rest as a contingency fund. These cars are cheap to buy but expensive to own. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I wouldn't call it a 'main' issue as it's just smoke. It doesn't mean the turbo is going to fail and many just live with it as the cost now of having the drain mode done may not be economically worthwhile vs the value of the car. Worth revving past 2500 on the test drive as if it does smoke it can be used as a price negotiation lever. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

went from 4.4 petrol v8 2002 to tdv8 4.4 and its a fantastic upgrade, long after you've impressed your friends, it will give self delight whenever driven... just a little squeeze on the pedal, and she's away, and pulling like your on a downward incline. and, you get the best fuel consumption of all the l322's. -its easy to get over 40mpg on a motorway run, and mid twenties on a mixture of scenarios. my tip is to find one with higher spec heated AND cooled seats... just look for two knobs on the lower heater controls either side of the clock. the SE model has superior leather on the seats too.

How do you get over 40mpg on the motorway and how are you measuring that? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

My TDV8 averages 34 mpg. I do a mix of long runs ( +500 miles ) and short hops to the gym and back ( 15 miles ) so I think 34 mpg is pretty good as an average. I love the performance of the 4.4 TDV8 and was lucky enough to acquire a sub 70k miler so she’s a keeper for me.

I’ve got no indications of the “common“ turbo drain or oil drain issues or doughnut air leaks but keep an eye out for those.

My post purchase check highlighted an issue with the A/C cooling matrix but it’s not failed yet so just keeping an eye on it.

The bottom line is every time I floor it and spin up the Aux turbo when joining a motorway or overtaking a truck the V8 roar brings a boyish smerk to my fizzog….. and no matter what maintenance is required it’s all suddenly worth it.

Good luck with the upgrade: choose carefully: plenty of good ones come through the for sale section on here.

P.S. very cool forum monica if I may say. Reservoir Dogs is one of my favourites. TDV8 4.4 2012

Huge amount of info on here which has been a great help.
2012 Westminster 4.4tdv8, one of the last L322’s, gorgeous car. Bought mine on 90k & in the first year had the oil cooler replaced, starter motor replaced, 2nd turbo actuator stripped, cleaned & put back on, after that, just regular service items. All these faults normally rear their ugly head pre 100k miles, so hopefully I’ll get no more. They love oil changes, gearbox serviced/megaflushed by Bodsy on here is virtually a must.
When I came back from Manchester after buying mine 3 years ago, admittedly driving like Miss Daisy with a new car, I got 44mpg on the computer, before you all sigh, that’s what the computer said & the roads from Manchester to Suffolk are all 64mph on cruise roads so really easy on the car.
Try & find “the one” for you then put the TD6 on fleabay or somewhere, you’ll be surprised how popular it’ll be!
Keep looking in the forum for sale section, you’ve got a really good chance of getting a good one.
If you’re over my neck of the woods anytime, just give me a message & you’re more than welcome to come over & I’ll bore the arse off you with how good these girls are😜

..purely via the dashboard indicator. i once did over 850 miles in two days, 95 percent on the motorway. i had reset the trip, and got 40mpg showing at the end. ..it had been as high as 44mpg.
