Been harsh on this? 3.6TDV8 - Bought/sold a 4.2SC *UPDATED*

*updated 26th Jan '23
Long time lurker. First time poster via P/heads.

We went and viewed a 2008 done 123k earlier today. It drove ok albeit it felt a bit wooly'ish on handling in the first instance ( I drove my CLS55 there) so could have been the going from one car into another, but it felt safe and nice to drive. I know these aren't built for track Very Happy

Nice looking car on 1st appearance. Started to do the usual look around. A bit of light rust on the rear arches, tailgates were good, the doors were good. Underneath looked like it had some surface corrosion. Not one stone chip on the bonnet. Exhaust pipes from underneath the area of the front seats to the rear looked like they'll soon give up - also noticed a slight ticking on start up until warmed up that went away. All discs had a lip and rear pads were quite low. Tyres were matching with the OSF worn to past saving while the others were worn on the inner edge with not a lot of meat on them, maybe a couple of k's for the rear - Can you just change the tyres on one axle on these when they get low or need to both axles at the same time?

Interior was nice and bright in cream/beige with dark piping but drivers seat was holed with a sag on the bolster. Most of the buttons on the dash and centre console I pressed worked things - there's loads of them in these Mr. Green I didn't try the suspension settings nor 4wd stuff as tbh I wouldn't know exactly what they would do and not do correctly. Lifting up the cover where the spare tyre is as well as the cubby hole on the left as you open up the tailgates I'm sure I caught a waft of derv. The reverse camera picture was milky and when I pressed the parking sensor button it kept making a noise.

Lifting up the bonnet was like something NASA had designed, although I had to keep hold off it to stop it from slamming closed so new struts for that I guess. I'm more a petrol person with the last one been an ML500 (W164) so derv stuff is kind of alien to me although I couldn't see much anyway. There was to me a slight whiff of the header tank smelling of burnt water but to be fair, I've never done the same thing to any other of my cars so could have been harsh on the car.

It was described as full documented service records. Last stamp in the book was early 2019 with a few receipts to back up previous stamps along with a g/box service in 2018. Not really too much before that and nothing in there from main dealers nor specialists.

Have I just slated an old car for been old or for this one been a neglected one or for me been a fussy clucker?

It was a lovely place to be and without a doubt very comfortable. Anyway, it was up for £8k and I walked away.

I don't feel you have been harsh. It's servcice history, condition and does EVERYTHING work on these beasties.. The list of concerning bits you made and the things you haven't tried are worrying.

Have you looked at the buyers guide for the L322 and the 3.6 specific guides in the wiki. If not do so, a mine of information in there. Cheers
Richard

I think you did the right thing walking. Mine is a 2008 3.6 Vogue and I would be very concerned to have what you have described.

£8000 is not far short of what one in good condition would command. John

Hi,

the more you look at the better idea you get for a good or maybe more easily the Not so good ones
as you say there are lots of bits to try, just spend longer looking Laughing
they do tend to lean a bit, its the Waft effect Cool
start with the price you think is right for a good one then deduct what you think they need and see what the figures show, its easy to spend on them to put things right (pelter unit for the heated/cooled seats £300 each ect ect)

Thumbs Up

Thanks for your replies and to know I wasn't been a total butt head. I wasn't expecting a new car just something that resembled the "full service history" would have been nice.

Also, is the electronic park brake supposed to make some kind of a noise? I saw the dash light come on and off but pretty sure I never heard it actually engage/disengage.

I can’t really hear mine working, not unless the radio is off and window down.

You will know if it’s working if you flick it on when you havnt completely stopped… nearly head butted the windscreen 🤣

Though obviously, easier to try it on a slope and make sure it holds the car without it in Park.

Didn't hear anything at all.

Maybe I need to find someone local to me more in the know to get a better idea of these cars that will show me around one. Also looking at petrol versions (my preferred version.) but the derv seems very suited to auto.

I suppose you will get more of an idea as to what’s good and bad when you have looked at/driven a few.

Unless, as you say, you can find someone with a tidy one to show you perhaps…

I'm off to have a look at another one in the morning Mr. Green

My wife really likes the black with beige interior so off we go to see another one. I've asked the seller a few questions and he's been pretty good with all the answers and some more. Owned it from new so fingers crossed Cool

Make sure you check the Off-road suspension height can be achieved via the console switch with the engine on & doors closed.
There's an awful lot of potential costs involved if the sir suspension isn't working correctly.
The car should rise approx 2 inches within 20~30 seconds. If it doesn't there are issues to be resolved.

Ideally you should drive at least 3 or 4 if you've never driven them before.
The variation in the way they drive can be significant & a good indicator of what is "standard" behaviour" & what is deterioration or "not right". Paul,

The one I looked at yesterday was nice enough from the brief 5 minutes we were there. The sellers wife didn't want it to go so they ended up having an argument so we left. Anyone on here? Laughing

He did say he'll call me later yesterday but not heard anything so presume he's either in hospital or under the patio. Never had anything like that before. Very odd.

Do these come standard with bluetooth were you just pair your phone up from the off or does it need something to get them to work?

Have another one lined up for the weekend as well a Merc ML420.
