In response to a request from another forum member a quick review of the turbos I had built for my 4.4 TDV8. I bought the car nearly 3 years ago and it suffered from the turbos smoking after a few miles of steady motoring, I decided it needed the oil drain mod but didn’t fancy the task while the engine was in place. I pulled the substantial lump of engine out and had a good look at the turbos, there was a little play in the shafts so to err on the side of caution while the engine was out I decided to have them overhauled before failure. I had intended on keeping the car so contacted a local to me turbo specialist who had done some work previously for me and asked his advice. His response was the standard equipment was average at best and could be easily improved, uprated bearings and billet compressor wheels were available and duly fitted. Rebuilt everything and carried out the drain mod, difference is impressive car pulls hard all the way to the redline if required where as the standard setup felt like it was running out of breath as the revs built up. To get the full benefit the car really needs remapping but it’s not something that bothered me as I just wanted the reliability, if you need turbos I’d certainly recommend having the mods done and incidentally he can also do the 3.6 ones although no hybrid parts are available only uprated bearings. Anyway I’m not going to get the benefit now as I’ve decided to sell all our RR’s and buy one newer one. If anyone is interested in the turbo company details I’ll pass them on after checking with them it’s ok(I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t)

Something that’s worth knowing is the turbo company recommended using 5/40 oil not the standard 5/30

If you have to pay a garage to pull the engine and recon the turbo's it's probably an expensive exercise for many who never have any issue with the stock turbo's Is the garage saying you need thicker oil for the uprated bearings or for the stock setup? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Oil recommendation was for the modified units I didn’t go into the standard parts too much as they were being replaced

I think if your turbos need replacement then the engine has to be removed, I couldn’t see a way to do the job without removing the engine
