LH Chain noise 4.4 TDV8

Morning peeps.
Been looking at a few minor issues that have been on the list for too long, but found a new one to add. However, I need to know how concerned I should be, what it could be, and what is involved in rectifying it.

The issue, as per the post title, is that there is a rattle from the right side of the engine. Closer inspection suggests it’s the LH chain/gears (on the right as you face the engine) and it sounds slightly rattly, or tappy. The other side is quiet in comparison. This is at idle (can’t reach the peddles with my head in the engine!) and only noticeable when you are close to the engine due to the other typical noises.

Oil level is good and only a few thousand miles old, was a warm engine, and was on a level surface.

I have a few concerns with my HPFP where I sometimes get vibrations from the fuel supply pipe, but don’t know if related or coincidental.

Any thoughts on this? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Are you sure the noises you're hearing aren't from the tensioner and/or pulleys for the auxiliary belt? The tensioner does eventually wear out and starts to make noise and is off-centre right as you face the engine bay.

You should be able to get a hand or long screwdriver down there onto the tensioner and feel any vibrations. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I had a similar noise and I 'think' it was the fuel pump. Sometimes it sounded horrendous and sometimes quiet. I put in some good quality fuel cleaner and I've never heard the noise since. Worth a try?

That’s a good shout. I replaced all pulleys and the tensioner within the last year with genuine parts (although chirping has returned from somewhere near my alternator). I don’t thing it’s from the tensioner as it is certainly louder near the engine block itself.

As I’ll be tackling that other chirp soon I’ll run the engine briefly without the belt to confirm. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I do have some engine treatment which you put in the fuel tank… I’ll give that a go. No harm in trying!
What cleaner did you use? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Hi ffrr14

Nothing more has been done directly with this issue. The noise remains the same and am monitoring it for the time being should it get worse.

I have since posting re-replaced my belt, and re-replaced my fuel filter, which has solved other noise issues…

I guess its chains or guide getting a bit tired, and don’t want to tackle that issue right now. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
