Older Range Rover buying advice

Hi All,

A mate of mine is looking to buy a FFRR for around £3000-£4000.

Hes changed job and wants rid of his euro box and wants something for running kids about and pootling.

Hes never bought a RR before and asked me for some advice.

I told him to go petrol and apart from the usual what would you wise people suggest I look out for?

Thanks in advance.

because of the 'older' in the title, are you referring to a p38.. ... - .- -.

I had a 4.6, loved it, I would go petrol with an LPG conversion, I had no problems with mine but I believe the suspension can be unreliable, hence many of them converted to shocks and springs. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

This place may be better as this is a Full Fat or L322 Range Rover forum and most have no idea about P38's although some might.

I have had several P38s in the distant past. i would recommend if budget allows going for the later bosch THOR v8 (99/2000 onward?) rather than the earlier lucas single plenum.Later ones seem less prone to liner slip, although by no means immune from it Shocked . Had a couple of my 4.6 p38s converted to gas and they were faultless. If the air suspension packs up it can be very expensive to fix so convert to coils at first sign of trouble. Also check all the electrics work as they should as everything is controlled by the central BECM under the drivers seat and they can be troublesome. 2.5 bmw 6 cylinder was a snail and manual gearboxes are best avoided Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
also
corrosion on lower tailgate(lift dog flap to check)
transfer box motors
air con failure(little book symbol on hevac display) Usually leak in system or blend motors
antifreeze on drivers carpet(heater core o-rings) 10p part, b*stard of a job
window winder mechanisms wear out and jump which causes a loud knocking noise as window shuts

There is probably a lot more that i will remember as the night goes on Rolling Eyes . Get a good one and it will be brilliant, get a bad one and it will bankrupt you within weeks. Guess i have been lucky with mine Thumbs Up

I had a 1992 RR Classic, and then a Disco 2 as I was not convinced a P38 would be reliable enough..........

Td5 ES was an ideal workhorse..........

I know it's not what you asked, but could be a better bet for the money ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Well my mate isn't handy with car repairs and after some advice from you chaps and some former owners on the D3 on the sister site I may persuade him to look elsewhere.

Thanks for all your input chaps.

Hi

Is your mate stuck on a RR. if he is i would go for the P38 4.0 L later model its more reliable.
If he wants a big 4X4 then for his price range i would go for a disco TD5 XS or ES.
He should be able to find a really good one for about 4k.

The other option is Disco 2 V8 on gas but if he's worried about fuel economy go for the TD5 they are great cars.
The ones he should be looking for are the ones that have had new air bags on the suspension and FSH.

I've had a couple if wants any advise you can PM me.
