Upper/lower glovebox won't open, key fob won't unlock doors

Hi everyone,

I took my dashboard apart recently to swap out the radio/navigation screen.

I went to do my (hopefully) final assembly but when installing the gloveboxes the lower would not open and then the upper stopped working too. I then noticed that the key fob won't unlock the doors. I can still lock/unlock at the drivers door with the key fortunately!

I tried the battery reset (disconnect the negative terminal for a while) but that didn't do anything. I am able to start the car still.

Checked the fuses that are associated with this but they all look fine.

I have heard from a friend that these cars are very sensitive to low voltage. My battery is 3 years old so it's possible that it's getting towards the end of life. I think I'll drop in a new one tomorrow (Monday for me here in the USA) as a preventative measure.

Any ideas or suggestions on things to check? I usually try to do my own work but sometimes I do my best but still need to take it to a real mechanic and chalk it up as a good learning experience Very Happy.

Thanks in advance!

Larry

I think you'll find a battery (hard) reset is:

Open bonnet and let car go to sleep
Disconnect positive and then negative wires from the battery
Touch the two cables together for a while
Reconnect negative and then positive.

HTH Cheers

Hi rjff,

Thanks! I'll try that today.

How long should I wait for the car to go to sleep? Would it go faster if I fed it a glass of warm milk Smile.

Thanks again,

Hi Larry

Off Topic Warm milk should always contain a measure of dark rum (advice from my family doctor, to me at the age of 8 ). Mr. Green

Had a kid's cold, still works. Thumbs Up

Perhaps leave for 10 minutes, but someone may have amore accurate time. Cheers

I found in the service manual that the time to wait is 20 minutes for everything to go to sleep (page 437 of the service manual). I actually ended up leaving it for about 45 minutes. Disconnected the terminals (neg then pos), touched them together and reconnected.

No change with that.

But, I took another look at the fuse listing and saw that I overlooked the fuses in the back of the car. Fuse 16 in the back of the car controls, "Remote control receiver, glove box switch." BINGO! Yep, this fuse was blown. Replaced the fuse and then had to reprogram the keys and the remote lock/unlock works again!

The glovebox switches still don't work. I'm guessing that when I was connecting and disconnecting everything that I messed up the switch and perhaps even the latches!

I've ordered a new switch and two latches from my local Land Rover dealer and that should cure the issue. Total for the switch and two latches is $214 plus sales tax.

I also found out that the glove box switch can just pop out without having to remove the dash panel. But, it's the switch itself and NOT the grey ring around it.

Hopefully this switch won't require any coding to my VIN to work! Otherwise I hope that my IIDTool can do that.

I'll post an update after I get the parts installed and see if it all then works.

Thanks everyone!

Confirmed. The switch is toast. I took the switch apart and found the chip where the "smoke" escaped.

I put a red box around the chip that got fried.

Thank!

So, my apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

But... Oh my god!! This post saved my sanity.

I've been trying for hours, failing to re-sync my key fob.

Ive just installed a new headunit, and faced literally every problem you originally mentioned. And yep, fuse 16 in the boot... Replaced and fixed it 🙌

Similarly, my glove compartments arnt working too - how hard were these to replace? And may other compatible/cheaper parts?
