Slow Water Leak

Hey everyone, does anyone have any ideas on where a small water leak might be on a 5.0SC. I basically am loosing about 300ml every 4 weeks / 1000 miles. No signs of a leak anywhere, no error codes so don't think its an internal issue, guess it could be rad as its had to see the whole thing.


Are there any common areas people are aware of to check.

Any discolouration in header tank? Could get a sniff test done to check for gasses in the coolant? 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)

Water is normal anti freeze colour. I don't think there are any internal issues I think its just a small leak somewhere.

I had the same issue and it turned out to be the water (coolant) pump leaking.

I've had the same amount of water going missing, and then the top hose was cavitating when the engine cooled. I know mine is the 4.4 tdv8, different than yours, but I've just put a new expansion cap on and the hose is now ok and no water loss yet. Worth trying at Β£6 for the cap.

Hi Lighthouse.

Had a very testing time over the last few months with multiple small leaks similar issue to yours on my 5.0 S/C also. I would advise pulling the engine cover and undertrays off and getting in the gaps with some blue roll, a mirror on a stick and a torch. If you have a pressure tester put that on the expansion tank. Over the space of a couple of months I had 4 or 5 tiny leaks; a drip on the water pump hose but right around the back, which I originally thought was from the water pump seals. Also one from the two o-rings connecting the metal pipes which cross over the supercharger, this was so hard to see as it was dripping into the V in the block behind everything and evaporating, and I could smell it but not see it! Poor design on the connecting piece in my opinion. One on the bottom of the expansion tank and a tiny one from the bleed screw. Last one was the o-ring on the top rad hose. Glad to say they are all sorted now but boy did it test my patience.

I'm fairly local to you in Maldon if you ever want a second pair of eyes. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, I will have a good look, planning on a full service this weekend and full brakes change so will have a proper look in those places.

Mine is doing that as well. A camera showed it is the water pump and it’s leaking and leaving it in the V bottom. Still need to get it replaced πŸ˜‚

I had a slight leak from my water pump on the old 4.4, intending to get it fixed. Then as I arrived at Meadowhall one day (80 miles from home) it went big style. Water was pouring out almost as quickly as I put it in.....

So I've been chasing a coolant leak on my 2012 MY 5.0 S/C.

Using an endoscope style camera, I could see coolant under the supercharger just behind the coolant pump.

On removing the pump, I could see that one of the seals on the black pipe to the oil cooler looked squished, so I've replaced the black pipe and seals and reassembled with new pump gaskets.

Then tested and found that there was another leak from a joint on the block outlet tube.

This was the joint labelled part 8592 on the parts diagram. New seals appear to have fixed this, but there is still another leak.

I'm praying that it's not the oil cooler gasket, but my next target is to replace the seals on the block outlet pipe, labeled HR2 on the diagram.

Does anyone know if this can be removed without taking off the supercharger? There are two torx bolts holding it onto the block, but I'm not sure if they are accessible.

Also, a word of warning, as when I tried to remove the bleed plug (HP1 on the diagram) it snapped off leaving half of it behind. It appears to be weakened with age, so broke off when pulled. An M8 tap and gentle pulling got the remains out.

If you need a pressure tester for the system, I bought the FreeTec 18pcs Radiator Pump Pressure Tester and Vacuum Pump Type Cooling System Kit from Amazon and it fits the expansion bottle. Not the best quality but gets the job done.
