My 2008 SC has developed an odd vibration in the driveline. I do not feel anything in the steering wheel, only in the seat bottom. Can also hear a thump, thump as if something is out of balance. Crawled under car once so far and tried wiggling drive shafts and half shafts but nothing moves. Any thoughts on how to proceed to ID the cause? Thanks. Gordon |

I did have all 4 tires rebalanced and checked for out of round. 2 were out of round and they corrected 1 but could not counturbalance the other.

Never heard of those chassis ears. I have been under the car once trying to wiggle the drive shaft and half shafts but all seemed tight. I know it can be tricky to get tension off so am going to try again today with wheels off the ground and Trans in neutral. Thanks for the reply |

I am going to remove the driveshaft and replace the steady bearing as not very expensive and not too hard to do from what I've read. Will also check or replace the U joint that is ahead of the steady bearing. |

Well I installed a new driveshaft for $1k and that did not fix the problem so I had to take it to a nearby LR dealer. They replaced a bunch of rear suspension components and that fixed it. $1500 for parts but they discounted that to $1100. Add $2k for labour and $300 for tax so total was $3400. Not too bad. 202k km on the car. They suggested I replace my steering rack for $5k because it had a leak or some play, got two different reasons, but doing that considering I can buy a rebuilt one for $500.

One of the first things I tried was getting all 4 wheels re-balanced and checked for out of round. They did find one tire that they could not completely balance out but the tires were not the problem. It took 2 weeks for them to get all the parts they needed. I had to wait 3 weeks before I could even take the car in so all in all I was without the car for 6 weeks. Luckily I have a reliable P38 to drive around. |

Possibly a sticking rear brake caliper |

I did wonder about that but there’s zero heat in the back wheels after a long motorway run. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

The dealer did say my left rear caliper was sticking and that could cause a vibration but turned out to not be the problem. It does seem to be sticking to some extent as that disc is much hotter than right rear. Going to rebuild it. Will also change all 4 rotors as I was planning to do that this year. |
