Underbody rust on 2012

Hi,

After being into defenders for the past number of years I've decided the natural progression was to a RR Smile

The other week I bought a 2012 TDV8, 136k miles. When I was viewing it I gingerly looked underneath, didn't want to go too overboard incase the dealer wasn't happy about a customer rolling around under a vehicle.

I've had more of a look now, and I'm just wondering what peoples' views are on the state of rust. At the end of the day it could always be blasted/wire brushed, repainted and waxed, but even so, perhaps they are other vehicles out there of similar age/mileage which aren't like this.

I've tried to upload photos here but get 'error uploading album data'.

Here's a link to show the photos on LRUK where I also asked, hope that's ok.

Thanks

Nothing out of the normal there. It depends where the vehicles been / sat etc.

When I was looking for a L322, 8 years ago there were plenty of examples much worse than that around then, it’s a real shame.

Yours doesn’t look too bad, but you never know about the body until you start to address it. The first thing I did with our old one was remove all the plastics, arch lines etc clean it up spray anything that needed it with Buzzweld Rust/CIO and then put a couple of hundred pounds worth of Dintrol into it.

The L405 has some components that do a equally good job of rusting so clearly JLR haven’t learnt. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Have you taken the plastic sill covers off to see what the rear arches are like?

I had a 2012, when it was 7 years old it had the front subframe off for the turbo drain mod, the corrosion was horrific, I would expect much better protection from the tin worm than JLR deem necessary. BMW i3 Electric Car

I had Raptor coating done after taking the rust off.
It is used extensively in the US but less so in the UK.
I researched it in depth and am comfortable it is very durable and long lasting.

I haven't checked the sills properly yet. As the consensus suggests, it should all be treatable etc. Thanks all !

Mine is a 2011 and there's nowhere near as much corrosion on mine as that one. It looks like surface stuff but even so, has it lived by the sea? Christian.

Impressive work above.

Not sure about how much time it has spent by the coast, I'd blame a combination of poor steel protection and time spent on salted roads. Only removed one sill cover plug and peered in, but although it sounds an oxymoron, my gut feeling is that the sills may be alright.

Was able to upload these photos using my phone. I used a ball peen hammer to tap at the flaky rust/old coating and the result shows the difference in thickness. If I got the subframe shot blasted in situ I’d expect the metal to be even more pitted and thinned slightly after that. :/
