What Is This Filter For?

i was topping up my screen wash, checking oil etc this morning and noticed what i can only describe as a small filter on the side of the fuel filter.

is is almost like an inline fuel filter and goes to the rear of the engine on a rubber hose.

the front end is open and connected to nothing.

does anyone know what this is? Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Gearbox breather filter, one end is attached and the other is not
