Didn't have a towbar

Other than back and forward to work, and the occasional continental jaunts, it was a relatively pampered car

Thankfully, it's rhe only one we've seen like that, but we have seen corrosion build up on quite a few cars now...

Mikey, are there specific areas you’re seeing this, aside the rear subframe mounts you’ve already highlighted? would be good to know where to check & hopefully catch before it becomes an issue Thumbs Up

I had hoped to leave corrosion problems behind when moving from my L322 to an all aluminium bodied L405 Rolling Eyes

Alu can be welded, but it's much more finnicky than steel.

Your comment about bonding had me thinking though. I wonder if a few could be bonded in place rather than welded. Imagine that you cut out the affected area, and a new piece which was moulded to cup around the larger area got bonded into place ?

I know getting a new piece would be a pain, but it'd be an easier process overall. V8 or else ...

I tried many years (25 years lol) to stick weld aluminium, with aluminium rods, it's like welding butter lol without any warning if it gets just slightly too hot it collapses into a molten mess. It can be done nowadays with TIG/MIG or plasma but never tried that lol.

Was that a car that had spent most of its life in Scotland, Mikey?

I keep looking at 405’s to replace my SC at the moment but this puts me off as it’s a much more specialised repair then the steel 322’s if they need welding.

Nope not good at all, the rest of the car just rusted into thin air Laughing Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

It looks like JLR depend on both surfaces having a protective film to prevent Galvanic action, even the fastenings are coated.

I would have thought from Mike's photo's, JLR would have fitted some sort of insulated gasket/spacer etc with insulated sleeve bolts during the build. Relying on a few microns of protective paint etc is totally not good Engineering practice. Just 1 scratch during installation and the barrier has gone!

I found below files in the WSM which may be of interest for anyone who goes down a weld repair it shows weld procedure and grades of Aluminium used (filler wire). The approved MIG welder uses Direct Current, (DC) and does not produce High Frequency, (HF), at start up, (initial arc).
