Good News

when i bought my FF last month, i was told it was a one owner from new with full L/R service history, which it is and the service book backs it all up.

the garage even put a new MOT on it for me collecting it, which it flew through without any advisories.

i sent an email to the service department that had looked after the FF all its life asking for any information they thought would be useful for me to know.

i got a reply today, saying that the diff recall has been done and last september they replaced the gearbox too.

this is a whole weight off my mind as i know the gearbox is one of the weakest parts of the FF. i presume it also means that the gearbox will be under 12 months manufacturers warranty until this september.

all in all a good day today.. Razz Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Its good news, or is it Question

I don't wish to wee on your campfire Embarassed but when I think back to my TD6, I had the diff recall done even though it wasn't showing any signs of needing doing, I just felt it SHOULD be done. From that moment on I had problem after problem, leaks and all sorts, it went back 4 times. I wished I had NEVER sent it in.

So the question is, WHY did yours need a new gearbox and does it raise suspicion when you hear of a major component having been replaced.

Would you buy a RR that had had a replacement engine for example? I wouldn't. Some people would think "Ah, great a new engine that will last the car much longer" whereas I would think "Why on earth has it had a new engine?"

Maybe its just me!

if it was a dealer fit gearbox, under warranty it is unlikely to have a 12 month warranty on the part.

Repairs under warranty terminate at the same time as the vehicle warranty. IIRC

i fully appreciate and understand what you are saying. but as far as cars go in my opinion, nothing is for ever and all you can do is buy the best you can to stand the best chance of survival.

it is well known about the gearbox/torque convertors on these cars going pete tong and that is why it was changed, because it needed to be and yes it makes it good for me. i only bought the TD6 as i didn't have enough cash to buy a V8 at the moment( wife got a new caravan which cost more than the FF)

but you are right, why has it broken with reletively low mileage on it??

my last car before the FF was a VW Touareg, which was my first venture away from L/R for years. it was a superb car in every way and an awsome tow car, which is the only reason i have a 4x4. but why at 3 yrs old with full MDSH do the rear brake calipers seize up?? why does anything go wrong on so called luxury cars?? you wouldn't expect it but it does. that was £2k of parts to rectify the problem.

i came back to L/R as parts are plentiful and generally cheaper and the obvious i love them part too.. Laughing

i just hope that i have bought as well as i can and it gives me little trouble for a year or two.

regardsless of anything else, how many of us would change the FF for anything else?? Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

HELL YEAH!!! the VW was so expensive for everything!! a set of front brake pads is about £180 to buy never mind fitting!!

my rear calipers were over £400 each, admittidley they were Brembo, as were all the brake stuff, but when it goes wrong it goes wrong BIG TIME.. Sad an alternator was about £700 as they are water cooled, i will NEVER complain about the cost of FF spares i don't think.

i do miss my 300bhp V6 engine though, it was a peach!!.. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Interestingly I was put off buying an otherwise perfect Vogue SE SC in Stornoway/Jet the other day as at the last moment I saw that the gearbox had been replaced under warranty at 45000 miles. Just set my mind racing and that was enough to walk away from what I am sure was a great car. Surprised

a 3 yr old touareg is around the £20k mark if you buy well, a similar V8 FF is nearer 30k, that's why i had to settle for the TD6 for now. i would have loved the smoothness and power of the V8, but it's not to be for the time being.

as i mentioned before, "her in doors" has just got us a new caravan, which i am over the moon with as it is just superb,it has nearly as many gadgets as the FF.. Laughing but the down side of this is that my car budget took a hammering... Big Cry

mind you the FF i have just bought is not what you could call a cheap car, i hope it holds it money well as it will be a deposit for my V8 in the future.

as i said before i fully get the why has something been changed senario, but if a car is otherwise fine and you would put it on your short list, would it not be better if it has had a potential problem removed at someone elses cost?? Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE
