FFRR Completely dead - High Pressure Fuel Injection Pump??

My trials & tribulations continue. my FFRR (53 plate TD6) died completely when out on on the road. warning came up on dash for 'Fuel Injection System'.

got towed into my local garage who have had a look and suspect it is the HP fuel injection pump at the engine. (fuel is pumping freely to the filter from the pump at the rear.)

any advice on trouble shooting would be appreciated.

also, I've heard that replacement HP Fuel pumps are very expensive. any tips on where best to source??

thanks

Alex

Sometimes cheaper to rebuild your existing one.

I imagine it's the Bosch VP44 (Same as BMW IIRC) that has stopped working. Most likely the ECU on the pump needs repairing but few people can do this.... I can forward the information how to do if you need to?

Check to see which pump is fitted and I may be able to help. Used to have:
2005 FFRR 4.4 Vogue - BRC LPG Conversion & Remapped

Now have:
2008 SSRR 3.6 TDV8 - HSE and plenty of toys

Thanks J, I haven't got access to the car at the moment as it's at my local garage. they've had it for a week and think they want to wash their hands of it.

I've been looking on the internet & found this. Bosch Part no 0445010009 Is it an easy job to change-out the pump unit, if not, I'm looking to get it uplifted from them and get it to a specialist.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Re-Diesel-Fuel-Pump-...43a09143e4

i think this is the correct pump - can't be 100% until i cross-check the part nos.

cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex,

I don't understand why the garage want to wash their hands of it - it's a simple common rail injection system, made up of three pumps (2 low pressure, 1 high) - They should be able to check the pressure after the second low pressure pump using a simple fluid pressure guage and by also verifying this reading with their diagnostic gear.

The sensor that is clipped on top of the fuel filter is a fuel pressure sensor - it tells you what pressure exists after the second pump low pressure pump, this is what the diagnostic gear reads.

Before purchasing the high pressure pump you need to be 100% certain that there is not a problem with the low pressure stage, as the high pressure stage can only build up max pressure if it is being fed enough fuel by the low pressure pumps.

I would bring it to a specialist or someone who is comfortable with common rail systems (Every garage should be, but many have not invested in the training or basic equipment). A competent garage experienced in common rail systems should be able to show you using actual pressure readings that the low pressure stage is fine, which would logically lead to an issue on the high pressure side (i.e a problem with the pump, or injectors.)

The garage you use needs to do a leak off test, and check the current going to the injectors etc to ensure the injectors are not at fault using a picoscope or similar.

Hope this helps you, in a nutshell, before you change the HP pump you really need to be sure the Low Pressure stage and the injectors are operating correctly.

All the best Thumbs Up

Stephen

yes i agree, i have read a few of landrover mads tech post and he does know his stuff.

all i can add is my range rover went down like yours... it was the secondary fuel pump. 65quid (non land rover) part and half hour labour to change. When ignition is on II you should be able to hear both low pressure pumps prime (hum). There is my thread here somewhere, only month or so old.

I'm am no expert on this but all my researching lead to the low pressure pumps failing (mostly secondary) or injectors, cannot remember any threads or info turning up with regards to faulty high pressue pumps on the td6.

Good luck. 2004 black Vogue TD6

Thanks Guys - Thumbs Up

the garage had checked the LP pumps and confirmed flow up to the HP unit but they are just a small independant without the correct diagnostic gear. I'm arranging for the RR to get uplifted and taken to a more specialised garage with the corect LR diagnostic software.

It's just a shame they've taken a week to admit this.

here's hoping that it's on the mend soon.

I wish it was that simple. It was refusing to start a couple of time the week previous & I had read up on some of the issues, inc. you posts about the 2ndary pump. I checked this myself by removing the cover plate & could feel it starting when the ignition was turned. (& it was still working when the car died on the road.)

thanks for the support.

Im having a similar problem to this and so far we have put it down to air getting into the system where the sensor fits on top of the fuel filter, have a look at the out going clear pipe going to the engine and see if you can see air bubbles in it, the fuel in mine was nearly all draining out causing starting problems too.

I wouldn't use that garage again if it tuck them over a week to diagnose and replace a faulty injector.

Glad it's all working again though Thumbs Up

Guys,

The post before this is a little ambiguous, so just to protect our good reputation ...

Can I please make it very clear that I solely provided sound online advice via this forum to Alex, we were not involved in the physical repair of Alex's vehicle in anyway.

Plus it would not have taken us 1 week to find the fault! Smile

Glad to hear you got the issue sorted Alex,

Stephen
