Hi,

So I had a metal on metal grinding noise suddenly start the other day at the rear and it's the drum brake retaining pin dropped inside the shield where the dust shield has corroded.

Is there a part number for the shields (might as well do both sides) and somewhere that does them cheaper than other places ? I noticed that someone had one that was a slightly different shape, so you didn't have to get the grinder out and cut a bit of metal off, is there a part number for that one? (I'm not going to remove the hub).

They do pattern ones on eBay... a lot of the online spares places do them as well... you have to cut them in half and then weld or rivet them back together if you don't want to take the hub off unless someone has done a two piece one... needs lots of googling..  Pete

Thanks Pete, just been Googling it and I see that I will need to cut in half and then rivet together as best option

You have to make some tabs to rivet the two sides to each other, you also have to make sure the shoes don't rub against the rivets, so some planning with positioning is required... I'd use some polyurethane sealer as well just to help out... then paint all raw edges... I did it on my old fatty, it wasn't too bad a job... get a shoe fitting kit with new clips and springs as well...  Pete

I'm just waiting for Duckworths to get back to me with a price for the shields, but good idea about getting the other bits at the same time.

So I finally got round to fitting the new back plates. The old ones weren't actually that bad, but had rusted through enough for the brake pad pin to pull through.

Anyway, all sorted now.

If anyone's doing this there is another way too rectify it. Order yourself a brake shoe fitting kit, preferably one that comes with the pin washer plates, angle grind the securing hole slightly wider so the brake pin fits through, place on the back of the brake dust guard, refit the shoes and push the pin through, jobs a goodun.

Obviously this is only a temp repair till the dust shield gives up completely but will get you through a while
