knocking on slow speed with steering on partial lock.

This may help fellow owners.

I have a 2015 Autobiography L405 with 55000 miles on it.

Since I have had the car I always had a slight dull knocking noise from under the car that sounded like a universal joint on one of the rear drive shafts, and was always more noticeable at slow speed on partial steering lock.

My local main dealer told me that the noise is fuel sloshing in the fuel tank! He said that it can be rectified by them by foam filling the tank at a cost of about £450

I thought that I would ignore the noise, but it was always on my mind and it was getting me very frustrated as I knew that it must be more than fuel slosh!

I investigated myself further and found out that some owners had a similar noise, and they cured it by changing the transfer casing (box) oil.

I purchased two litres from the aforementioned main dealer for £60 and two new copper gaskets for the fill and drain plugs.
The oil change took about 20 minutes and was carried out on my drive at home with the suspension on full height with no ramps.

I can only say that the difference in the car is miraculous! No more noise!
The car is quieter and the throttle uptake via the transmission fantastic.

I have heard that some RR's have had the oil change at 30,000 miles.

I did use land rover specified fluid as it looks like a special blend with an odd smell unlike oil.
The unit takes just over 1 litre of oil.

Hope this rings a bell with some owners.

Worked for me too, bought enough Special oil for the two recommended changes (flushes), i did just the one flush and have yet to change it once more. 2014 L405 3.0 V6 Autobiography Santorini Black 49k

It's interesting the difference an oil can make.

My M3 had a knocking noise on full lock turning right. It seemed to come from the front wheel arch, but it wasn't consistent.

Turns out that it was the differential oil. This was drained and replaced with a different oil with a friction modifier.

Job done!
