Just take off the negative without the ignition on. Done mine a load of times, no issues.

Procedure is in the Workshop Manual which is in the WIKI... don't think it will set the alarm off but there is an explosive disconnect in there somewhere so you may lose a few fingers... Pete

That's on the positive terminal and it's activated from a crash sensor so you'd need to be pretty dynamic with the terminal to trigger it. This is why we disconnect the earth, no danger there.
