Locked out of my 2011 RR Vogue

Alarm sounded the other day, when locked and parked on drive. It would not stop using key fob, so connected battery charger to towing socket luckily silence.
So I thought battery must be flat as was working on it a couple of days before. After leaving charger on for several hours and getting a decent voltage on charger, tried opening with fob NOTHING!

I have tried emergency key in door, barrel turns both ways but does not unlock. Have had charger on for a couple of days, battery is holding some charge as alarm does not go off during night. Still getting no reaction when fob is pressed (changed battery in fob also just in case it was that).

Just a note battery went flat during lockdown last year summer with no alarm sounding, put charger on, managed to unlock after a few hours. Has worked ok ever since until now.

Open to any suggestions guys. -----------------------

V8 Bob, I have tried all buttons on fob, no joy.

Fox889, yes have tried other key fob.

When I tried again last night, I noticed that the dashboard background energises when the unlock button is pressed, then goes off again. So that makes me think that the key fob is still talking to the RR, but not enough to open it. -----------------------

i reckon the main battery needs replacing...you say the charging has brought it up to voltage but it could be that a drop test will reveal dead cells.. ... - .- -.

I know this might not be relevant, but I had a Ford Explorer that wouldn't unlock if I was near a transmitter tower. I found the receiver on the car was in the rear wheel arch and if I hovered the remote right next to the metal of the wheel arch it would work. Can you find where the receiver location is on our your car and try it?

Have you tried unlocking while the battery charger is connected, either to the white socket or onto the power lead at the starter motor?

The mechanical key should work unless it is the wrong key, if it turns then it's the right key, it does take quite a bit of force to unlock the door, give it another go and turn harder.... just be aware you can snap the key if the lock is broken in some way... Thumbs Up Pete

Have you considered that whilst you have a charger connected to the tow socket there may be corrosion in the tow socket connections inhibiting any charge voltage getting to the battery, the earth connection is the usual suspect. If you have a charger connected to the tow socket l would expect the locking to work irrespective of the state of the battery, unless of course there is an unrelated locking fault.

I agree with Nicedayforit’s concerns.

I spent ages trying to resolve a charging problem through the white tow socket.

It was showing 13 volts on the socket end monitor, but barely 12v at the battery terminals until I found 2 suitable sized drills and cleaned out the female holes in the socket.

Thanks for your replies.

Stan, battery is less than 2 years old but second time it's been flattened. problem is I cannot open bonnet to get to it.

kevinp, have tried fob in several places.

GraemeS, tried that.

Haylands, key turns 90* both ways, then I get resistance.

nicedayforit, battery charger does test and seems to be working ok, plus alarm stopped when I first connected it, so assume power is getting throu.

Just to update you all,
Had Green Flag out, he immediately said battery. He did not manage to unlock it, said emergency key mechanism must not be connected in door. Only option he offered was dealers.
Spoke to a Landrover specialist, said seeing emergency key not working, they would have to smash a window and climb in to release bonnet!!

Surely they must be another way to open bonnet or tailgate???

I am now very disheartened with my 18 months of ownership. -----------------------

You will probably have laminated side glass so all your windows will be very hard to break enough to get in...

If you really have to I'd wreck the grille and pop the bonnet that way... although the alternator connect on Stans link looks like the best idea...

Good luck Pete

Given that you can't get in the car l would assume nothing personally. Wink
The alternator connection is worth trying if you can get under the car.

Not on a RR, BUT had a Navara stuck in my garage, completely dead battery and getting to the door lock with the key was impossible as the passenger side was 3 inches off a wall, same with front end.

Makers ( Nissan UK head office ) said smash the cheapest window Shocked called AA out, we jacked the Navara up, connected a jump starter pack to the chassis and starter motor, that put enough current in to operate the central locking, then we could drag it out of the garage.

I would check first, but just an idea? Hope this helps Thumbs Up
