Oil Cooler Change - When it started so well

Hey Team,

So started process of changing the oil cooler today, all going well stripping down the engine, then come to the last bolt to undo, and the buggar is rounded, and can i get enough purchase with anything to get it out, can i jeff !! Censored

Its this one ( picture isnt from mine, its from the awesome pictures on the wiki )

Im assuming its rounded on the top because someone previously has tightend this up to within an inch of its life. I havent got this far to put it all back together, so looking for some suggestions about how to get this out. Ive basically ran out of wd40 ive sprayed so much as it, ive tried various pliers but just can get enough purchase and the position of it is a royal pain.

Please bestow upon you me your must genius solutions.

If you don't have the right torx socket......mole grips?

Or hammer a small socket onto the post and remove?

Or two nuts tightened together on the thread and the right spanner? Try and undo the lower nut while keeping the upper nut from moving.

Yeap, that's what I would do; two nuts and may be a bit of heat with a propane torch!?

Cheers Gents - think I might be a little scared to get heat in there due to the pipes, put 2 nuts now that’s a sensible idea!

I did try some mole grips, but the ones I have are on the large side so couldn’t really get the angle for maximum effect.

Dig around in the garage now for some suitable nuts ( I’ll probably have 1 based on how my days gone so far 🙄 )

So far, I at least have the nuts that fit so good start.

Just need to brew coffee before I can brave the cold outside 😂

Two nuts locked is the way to go, for the future forget WD40 it's rubbish for anything other than cleaning, use plus gas for freeing off fastenings, available by the gallon on Amazon with a pump spray, much better. BMW i3 Electric Car

A 9mm 16 sided long reach socket knocks on nicely from experience… Do at least 2 of these a month and many of them are stuck!

Craig Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - had a quick look yesterday at the 2 nut option, but muggins over here has caused a bit of damage to the tread trying to get it out with pliers. Only tried for a couple of mins as the pull of the pub won out the day.

Going to tackle that again today, going to get some Plus Gas before i start, hopefully i can convince the nuts onto the tread and it will be simple enough.

Ill probably need to get a replacement bolt also, it seems the top has worn away, so not only is it rounded, but there is only the smallest part of the actual hex bit left, anyone now the part number / type of bolt it is ?

So with one source of potential oil leaks resolved - still have far too much oil coming out to consider it just residual.

Poking around the front of the engined whilst trying to sort 2nd turbo actuator ( Jesus the list just goes on ), I noticed this

Should the hole in the middle of the picture have some sort of bolt in it ?

It’s right under the throttle body so can’t see it when all plugged in, but as oil goes everywhere and this is right above the belts, I’m hoping someone can confirm my theory ( plus advise on a part number if my luck is really in )

Thanks

After watching some YouTube videos ( i couldnt find this detailed on any engine diagram i cold find ), i think this must be mabe an engine mount point, as nobody has anything in this.

The search for the leak continues
