Rattle from front speaker itself - repair or replace?

Since my car arrived I’ve had a rattle in the front near side lower speaker. It’s only noticeable with songs with plenty of bass as it’s normally drowned out by the rest of the music. Unfortunately there’s a few songs where it really shows.

“Not to worry, it’s probably a lose clip or wire and an easy fix”!

After battling to remove the door card (that middle clip was a struggle for me) and removing the speaker, I find that it’s the speaker itself that’s rattling. I’m holding the speaker in my hand with music playing and I can hear it rattling inside (only music, nothing if I shake it).

I notice there are some additional screws around the cone, but they are partially obscured. Is it possible to break down the speaker? To locate the cause of this rattle? Or am I better off simply buying a replacement speaker?

I also have a creaky door card where the speaker cover part is… but will take a closer look next time I dismantle the door as it looks like it has screws holding it together so should be able to do something there… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Seems to be a common fault, genuine ones on e bay for less than £50 - or I think there is a thread on here about replacing with a generic unit.

I had this issue on a 2011 with Logic7, bottom left speaker. Went to the trouble of taking the door card out to see what was causing the rattle. The speaker was broken and would rattle at high volume.

Ordered a factory new speaker and the rattle is gone. More importantly, the quality of the whole audio system has improved dramatically. I suspect that the rattle was causing some interference with the whole amp. With the new speaker the sound is much better control and bass pressure is significantly higher.

Ive got the same issue and if I’m going to faff with taking the door card off I may as well have a replacement speaker on standby!

So I eventually got around to this job this weekend! (My one successful planned job so far!)

As mentioned, the rattle was with the speaker itself and the replacement has made a huge difference. Not a difficult job at all, with the only tricky part was getting the door card off for no reasons other than it requires a bit more force that you fear will snap something! Once it comes off once, any other times are quick and easy.

Now that rattle has gone, I have a new one!

I believe that this is from the door card itself. Specifically the lower speaker cover attached to the door card is creaking to the touch and I think this is the source. My next job is to see if that section is removable (I suspect it is) and then to pack the joints with some form of tape to remove the squeaking. I’ll also order some more plastic clips for the speaker screws as I am not overly happy with the ones already there…

After removing the old speaker I had a good intrusive look at what caused the rattle, and can’t see anything amiss. I suspect there is little you can do to salvage a speaker in this state. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

How odd, took my door panel off this weekend to cure a creaky door speaker cover and also discovered than it wasn't just the panel creaking, the speaker has blown.

I've ordered a pair of Pyle 6.5" drivers from Amazon which I'll be doing tomorrow hopefully (depending what time they arrive)

I'll take some pictures. Christian.

The plastic speaker grille is not removeable. It's attached by what appears to be sonic welding (melting) some trunnions over at the end to secure it.

I've used felt tape to lessen mine creaking as it seems to stem from the union between the grille and the inner part of the door Christian.

Urgh… that’s a shame. Looks like I’ll have to do something similar then. I need to sort a couple of other creaks dotted around in a similar fashion.

I had something similar many years ago on my 5 series. The wiper stalk had a button on the end that rattled, and the fix (apart from dismantling the steering column and replacing the stalk) was a tiny bit of tape wedged in the end! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I’ve just replaced the big speaker at the bottom of the drivers door on my SC.

It was rattling at anything above low volume. Easiest and more reasonable price for a replacement was Rob at Duckworths. A nice simple job to swap it when it arrived too! 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather
