l322 Transmission range sensor

HI
Bougt a 2002 l322 4.4, 70,000 miler with what I hoped was a minor fault, but no it was major! Embarassed
we have had the engine out and done a full re-build, it has gone back in and running fine, however we are having a problem with the car getting confused on gears if you start in P, it is fine started in N, checked adjustmentt on the cable and that is fine.
there is a fault on the reader that says, 'Transmission Range sensor circuit malfunction (PRNDL input)' it is hopefully a poor connection but checked everything we can think of. ANy ideas greatly appreciated.

Not 100% sure but this could be the problem, worth checking out the video below

It may be worth investigating first as they are not cheap, someone with more info may be along soon, hope this helps Thumbs Up

EDIT - There is a video of someone opening up a unit for repair, can't find it at the mo, will keep looking, fingers crossed.

thanks for the reply, I was hoping it wouldn't be the switch but if I were a betting man that's what it will be.

Check your battery if not done so already!

If you were not the one that fitted it, you should better change it imho as these cars rely heavily on a good charge.

I had the same problem with the car not starting on P and starting fine on N. Whenever it did start on P it would throw a "trans failsafe program" error.
I went on to buy a new switch from Famous Four at somewhat a bargain at 500 quid prior Brexit. Then the battery died on me while the new switch was on its way. Battery replacement cured the issue.

You could test at the connector to check that the L1, L2 & L4 pins all show continuity with the +ve pin, but not L3, with the selector in the Park position.
