I know thus is a sort of related question to the EGR threat.

Has anyone fitted a Provent type crank case ventilation filter or catch can to there tdv8 3.6 to stop oil vapour and EGR fumes coming together to clog up the driver side intake manifold and turbo? Oil vapour only goes to the driver side intake according to the WSM. I know there is already a CCV filter fitted to the top of the motor. I don't know how effective this is.

I have been wondering this myself, there is some pretty compelling evidence that the Provent filters work wonders.

They seem to. I’ve had one on my old 110 with a Isuzu 3.9 4BD1 (factory fitted 82-90 civy and up to 96 for Aust Army). I vented to the atmosphere after the provent, and there was no visible oil vapour.

So I think something similar could be done with the 3.6. ______________________________

Old topic which I've found through the search and here's a bit of a ramble:

My wife uses the car to drive to work in, uses parking heater to help warm up the engine and not booting it along the way. Distance: 15 Miles/20Km one way.

My 3.6 started to leak oil from mostly the LH valve cover and less through the RH one (seen from the drivers point of view) and this started fairly suddenly and it looked like a pretty serious leak.
When we got the car everything was nice and looked mostly untouched and certainly not cleaned around the engine and under it.

Not looking forward to swapping out the valve cover seals as it's a pretty involved job, especially on the driveway in winter time got me to think things over.
The CCV/PCV valve that regulates crank case pressure might need replacement or cleaning because it's a bit clogged ?

Did an oil and filter change just before a long trip over the past few days using mostly Autobahn here in Germany and the leaks seem to have stopped !
This might be because of the long trip (part) of the valve system has been cleaned out a little ? (I know there's some kind of membrane in it) so that might be it?

My theory is that when the CCV is clogged it tries to push out exces pressure through the path of least resistance which is most likely the valve cover seals so a new CCV thingymabobber is certainly cheaper or at least easier to do than the valve cover seals.

Any opinions on this from the collective ?

Yeah I think I'll order a new ccv thing just so I know it's a new one.
Meanwhile it's nice of it to have stopped leaking. I hope it'll keep that up until the nicer weather arrives !

Edit: I ordered a new membrane for it which is around 25/30 quid. The complete valve thing, which is basically a plastic housing is at least 3 times that. I'll update when I get the thing delivered.

Well, the new membrane arrived and is in place. It was a right pain in the bum to get the PCV valve out but went back in without much hassle.
The old membrane was rather stiff compared to the new one which feels like it's made of silicon rubber.
No pictures of me struggling as EVERYTHING is in the way of something else, be it so you can't see what you are trying to get at, or you can see it until you are trying to get at it or your tools are in the way, other parts that try to hold it hostage are in the way etc. etc.

Being a bastard of a job on a scale of 1 to 10 where no heavy tools are required this is very much a 10 !

If you are replacing parts in the valley, don't forget this one !

(I didn't drop some of the coolant so I didn't need to refill and bleed the system so here's my tip: Drop some of the coolant so can take off some of the coolant hoses and then it's a fairly easy job.)

BTW, turned out it wasn't clogged, looked pretty much spotless in there apart from obvious oil traces.

Update: No more oil drips from the engine after changing the membrane in the PCV or CCV valve/oil separator !

Happy with that and for me, well worth the agro of replacing it without taking off any coolant hoses.

Now, for my next trick, I'll likely be replacing the thermostat housing
