2012 4.4TDV8 Battery Charging Points - CTEK

Finally got round to putting the CTEK 7.0 onto the car today - not as simple as my old 4.4 V8 Petrol in terms of battery accessibility as the terminal nuts are captive, so trying to install a permanent CTEK attachment proved difficult (for me!).

This leads me to the question of - what are the best points to attach the positive and negative eyelets? I managed to attach to the positive on the battery, and then a possible earth, but after having charged for 4-5 or so hours on AGM setting (have AGM battery), and the CTEK unit showing battery nearly fully charged. When I disconnected, the comfort indicator was flashing red.

Have I done something wrong, or a dodgy charger unit?

Thanks

Dan

Do you have 13 pin towbar electrics? If so you can use that.

Not sure on your other questions.

HTH Cheers

Thanks Richard.

I seem to have 2 x 7 pin plugs, but I read that they are not suitable as they don’t have direct battery connection (black cap, rather than white/grey?).

Been using the towing electrics for over 5 years with no issues with mine.

Got the adapter from the forum shop.

Sorry about that Dan.

May be worth a check of the wiring in both your sockets to see if some kind soul has fitted 2 black instead of one black and one white/grey. Pin 4 is live battery and pin 3 is earth on the S type for use on the CTek etc.

both wiring to pins on that link. Cheers

I also need to work out whether the charger is faulty before hand, as if my charging points were correct originally, the battery didn’t take any charge.

The battery has been fine, just used for a few short journeys recently, so thought I’d give it a quick charge as it wasn’t being used today.

ISTR there are a couple of threads on here about connecting CTek and other chargers, if I find them I'll link. Particularly where to fit so as to be able to access a charging point when the battery is dead and you can't open the door. And that's another advantage of using the trailer electrics, connect, switch on and you have power to the doors etc.

But someone who has done so will be along soon to help. Cheers

I think my 2 plugs are white and grey.

I’m not a towist, so don’t know what that means, or what a black one does. Though from being a kid and my Grandad caravanning, one might be to charge a fridge 🤣

I believe black is for indicators etc, and white/grey is for caravan interior electrics.

No idea why I would have two black though! I’ve only had the car a month, so still learning!

You can see how much I know🤣, but done a quick google, and it seems there are 3 main types, black 7 pin, just the basic lights…. Then there’s that plug and another 7 pin, which seems to be white and does the added charging bits for a caravan battery and fridge constant supply etc…. Then there seems to be a more modern 13 pin that seems to have all that but in a single socket…. Which more modern caravans use… not sure what pins my 2 sockets are, but pretty sure I don’t have a black one….

Your grey one may be faded black ?

It's the white one that is likely to have a permanent live.

The old UK system had a basic 7 pin black socket for trailers - with no permanent live. You could then add a second socket (AKA twin electrics) for all the stuff that a caravan needed - that included a permanent live.

As you stated, the European 13 pin combined both of the old UK sockets into a new single one.

Then along came the deployable tow bar on the L405 and you can't get to the electrics when it's stowed anyway Confused

Dan

Enter CTek in the search function on here. Lot's of info.

You can use the earth points on the body under the bonnet with a lead from the battery +ve and a connector either under the bonnet or poking out from the grill. The former leaves you stufffed if the battery loses all charge. The latter at least allows a charger to give power to get into the vehicle. That is also an advantage of using the towing electrics. Cheers

@Alistair - any reason you know of why I would have two black plugs?
