At my whit's end trying to solve this :-( Loud noise

Hi hopefully someone can help me with this. L322 TD6 3.0 140K runs perfect, gearbox smooth as silk and pulls well with no smoke.
Then all of a sudden a loud metallic tapping appears, I lose power and get black smoke out of the exhaust.
When it does happen its only when under load and it increases in frequency with the revs but no noise when in neutral.
It has been very hot recently so thought it may be heat related but its only 12c outside today and it started again after my drive home.
I have an ICARSOFT Diagnostics gizmo but it shows no codes at all which is strange in itself.

It sounds to be coming from the front of the engine so I'm thinking Water Pump / Cooling fan but if the bearings were going on these why would it cause loss of power and the black smoke.
Also thinking Turbo Failure but it runs fine for miles and then starts and the Readings show steady Turbo RPM readings

Has anybody had a similar issue or any ideas on where to start?

Thanks in advance

Without knowing the engine, the description sounds very similar to a delaminating turbo to i/c hose on a TD5 whereby the inner wall of the hose is flapping partly or sometimes fully blocking the hose.

Thanks for the reply, The turbo hose was replaced with an OEM item a couple of years ago. The Hose had come off where it attaches to the intercooler which did cause loss of power and black smoke but no bad noises. Also if it had done this again it would be a permanent issue. The motor can go 20 miles before it starts clanking away!

I would still check hoses for turbo make sure they are not collapsing under load. This could cause the turbo veins to wobble and they will eventually disintegrate.
so i would be removing the hoses and checking the Turbo not too big a job on the TD6 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

You can get a loud metallic tapping from a faulty diesel injector.

Water pump and cooling fan will not produce black smoke...

EGR valve can cause black smoke and I suppose has the ability to make noise...

Don't know if your diagnostic tool can, but it maybe helpful to have some live values being monitored whilst driving to see if you can narrow it down...

Hopefully it will get worse quickly so you have a better chance of diagnostics.... Thumbs Up Pete

Not sure I would trust the icarsoft dongle, black smoke under load would indicate turbo failure, loss of pressure or over-fuelling. I would certainly check the fuel injectors, and issue here and you could be getting 'engine knock' under load due to the miss timing of the combustion process...that would be my best guess as to what the noise is. I would pull the injectors and look if the body is cracked, it can happen with age.

Thanks for all the advice, have just done my back in working on my lads TT so cant do much at the moment.
Will def get the turbo pipes off ASAP and check the Turbo bearings as this would be the biggest thing to go caput.
Will also try and get some injector readings from the Icarsoft although I am not sure it will allow access to that area.
Fuel air mixture readings would also be interesting to monitor.

Thanks again

Remember

Black smoke normally indicated Fuel too much of it
Black / Blue = Oil

as for the noise could be a number of things would be good to capture some Audio also have a look on the BMW forums for the same engine cars they might throw some light on this. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Just watched this video and the noise is very similar but would a worn big end bearing cause lack of power and black smoke?

Very much doubt it, maybe an idea to get a mechanic to diagnose what's wrong rather than upset yourself by lots of guessing...!! Thumbs Up Pete
