Technical question I need help with...

Afternoon chaps - I have a question for some of our more technologically minded members ... But hasnt got anything to do with our beloved FFRR's - Does any one know how you would introduce a factory fitted digital / sat nav system of say,.... A late model VW Golf, etc. into a early model VW camper van, 1970s so its radio reception sat nav would be as up to date as it could be? ... but, it not interfere with the older vehicles original electricals ?? ...
It's for a promotional vehicle we've been asked to get involved with creating which needs to travel about a bit uk and rest of europe

Would such a thing be easy Smile or Big Cry ???

it's nothing I know anything about Whistle

Thanks guys Thumbs Up

i would say for the sat nav part it would be easier to use a TomTom or similar device.

I assume the question early VW Van / late electronics was asked with a specific purpose - and aftermarket is not what that purpose is Laughing

Delamo, I played with the idea of installing a VW system into my P38 several years ago - till I discovered there is nearly no way to make a double DIN unit fit in the console. The units I looked at (and I don't remember which) were very much like aftermarket units in that they were basically self-contained double DIN radio/nav/etc units. The only additional item needed was a GPS antenna.

I'd look through VW forums and find threads dealing with retrofitting navs to cars that came w/o. Ask questions there as well. I'm sure if it can be done, it already has - while nifty, it's not going to be an extremely novel idea. So you just have to find the appropriate info on it. If you can't find anything an English-speaking forums, get back to me and I'll search some of the German forums. And show the results here when you've finished.

Thanks matt and scarey - but Steve is thinking along the right idea...

A digital signal aerial (like the 'dolphin' aerial we have on the L322, but the VW equivalent) that is directly hooked up to a dashboard fitted (manufactured) VW radio / sat nav receiver unit from a specific model car and then wired into (powered by) the older vehicles original electrics?....

...and without too much fitting issus /problems??...

...the client is intending to have a new dashboard design commissioned for the actual head units/displays to fit into position and make neat - i am just wondering about making it work correctly without rewiring the whole thing - The client doesnt just want ToM ToMs or iPads etc. bolted in either.

Once again - apologies that this ain't about a FFRR - but we have some clever chaps on here that thrive on this kind of wizardry and I am just keen to get some ideas

Thanks Thumbs Up

Many factory fit units require can bus signals to notify the Sat Nav unit of the ignition status, dash board light status and when reverse gear is selected, in addition they often need a pulse count input from the speedo.

After market units such as Alpine and Pioneer do not, they come in double din units or single din units with pop out screens. I recommend you pop down to your local car stereo retailer and get them to price up a system for you.

5 minute search - so info is not complete:
You can fit up to a VW MFD1-D (ebay sellers will often not post the version) w/o issues - the only thing you will need is the speed signal. If the van already has an electronic speedo, you just need to tap into the signal wire. If not, there are adapters that are added to the speedo drive cable.

You may be able to fit later units - there were all sorts of discussions on how to bypass CAN inputs, etc. I did not have time to sort through this.

Try giving these people a call: http://www.navigationpros.com/vw-navigation/

Here's a pic of the MFD1:
