i would say for the sat nav part it would be easier to use a TomTom or similar device.

loads of after market units that do radio/nav/dvd etc available on ebay, and these can be retro fitted very easily.... |

I assume the question early VW Van / late electronics was asked with a specific purpose - and aftermarket is not what that purpose is

Many factory fit units require can bus signals to notify the Sat Nav unit of the ignition status, dash board light status and when reverse gear is selected, in addition they often need a pulse count input from the speedo.
