Intermittent click on starting

Good afternoon all

I have recently had a problem where i get a click on starting but not all the time and seems pretty random although i fear it is becoming more frequent.

A quick scan on here suggests starter motor is likely culprit but before i go ahead and get a replacement just wondered if it could be anything else more straightforward as when it does engage starter motor fires up as usual so could it be electrical i.e. dirty contacts somewhere?

Many thanks

I’d put money on that being the starter motor.

Our 2012 is on it’s 3rd replacement (4th in total) at just 24k miles.

It’s a doddle to change from underneath the car, you can do it with removing nothing else but the undertray. I had it off in 30 minutes and was able to get a Denso one from Euro Car Parts that was in stock on the shelf and had it done very quickly. Although it’s not the cheapest thing to change (Circa £350 for a Denso from memory) it’s certainly an easy job to change.

Ours started off intermittently and got progressively worse before it failed altogether so I’d change it before it fails somewhere that it’s a right pain in the arse!

There is a guide on here somewhere about cleaning the contacts on the starter which might be worth doing too. I’ve got the one I took off ours to clean and keep as a spare.

ok great, thanks for the swift reply David I'll order a replacement and get the spanners out! Laughing

I see the Denso one on Euro Parts is approx £550 Shocked so just wondered if anyone on here has any experience of other aftermarket examples? Rimmer Bros has one for £222 inc vat. I don't do that many miles and she only gets used a couple of times a week max.

Thanks again

John.

Unless you use their discount codes the prices are wired to the moon. Add it to your basket then use the code “goal45” and it brings the price down to £366.

Denso were the original make. I’m not sure if there’s any better ones or not.

I had this. Swapped the starter for a denso one but didn’t cure the issue. Thought it was a bad cable/connection but couldn’t find a fault. Specialist swapped for a genuine one and fine ever since! 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)
