United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue
[Wanted] 4.2 SC Gearbox

As per the title really...

Looking for a good condition used gearbox after my SC spat it's dummy out Rolling Eyes

I presume they're different to TDV8 boxes so will likely need to be an SC box.

Thanks,

I changed one recently David… I put a 2008 RRS SC ZF6 into our 2005/6 4.4 NA AJ V8… The only thing I could find different was the electric brain part in the box… (the bit your loom plugs into)

3k miles later and all is perfect still…

Thanks Craig,

Given the amount of crap floating around inside my gearbox I don’t really want to use my valve block if I can avoid it as it’s probably riddled with debris.

Looking in the workshop manual the ratios for the TDV8 box and the 4.2 SC box are identical so I’m wondering if they’d be interchangeable which would be handy.

As discussed David, all mechatronic units are the same upto end of 07MY and change for 08MY

Mechanically, the 4.4 and 4.2 boxes are identical

Ideally, you want to find an 05/6/7 box which is a direct replacement, or a later box and a good earlier mechatronic unit Thumbs Up
The 4.4 NA box is likely to have had an easier life too Whistle Laughing

Did see that. They obviously have a different opinion of low mileage Laughing

Replacement gearbox purchased.

Managed to get one for £650 with 98k on it and a 3 month warranty.

Apparently it should be here on Monday so we'll wait and see!

Then the fun starts. Is it coming with the TC? Don't forget to flush out the cooler and lines or change them... I take it you will get it on the ramp to change the box... be a nightmare otherwise... Pete

Yea, it's coming with a torque convertor thankfully as I don't know what crap will be in mine.

I'm going to buy a drum of Life Guard 6 from Smith and Allen and will use that to flush the lines and cooler whilst the gearbox is out so that none of the crap gets into the new box.

I need to have a look at the manual and see what the process is like and decide if I'm going to do it. Getting it out of where it is on the grass will be the biggest problem as I removed the valve block from the box the other night as I was going to test the solenoids so I'm going to need to put that back in to get it out of park so that I can get it near the workshop.

My brother has started doing a nut and bolt rebuild on his old EK9 Civic Type R which is on the ramp at the moment so that'll need to be lifted off the ramp so that I can get the RR on the ramp.

I don’t get what went wrong didn’t you do an oil change and it was golden earlier in the year and now it’s self destructed since then? Current stable:

2007 4.2 V8 S/C FF
Gone:
2002 4.4 V8 FF

I put new solenoids in it as there's a lot of info on the net about them failing at 120 odd thousand miles, I replaced the bridge seal and the 4 rubber dowel seals and I then replaced the sump and filled it with fresh Lifeguard 6 oil that I got from Rob at Duckworths.

I've had 2500 miles of smooth changes, no rev flare ups, no signs or feeling of it slipping or anything.

Just before it packed in I'd come up the lane to the house which is reasonably steep, I'd stopped and gone into low range and driven into the field, stopped to close the gate and driven off again. Looking at where it broke down it's around where it would have changed from 2nd to 3rd. I stopped as it sounded like something was dragging under the car (air con was on medium so couldn't hear properly) after looking under the car I got back in, started it again, and when I went back into Drive there was no drive there.

I dropped the fluid on Tuesday evening and it was black and burnt and there was Censored on the magnets on the sump too.

No idea what went wrong and why it happened so quickly with no warning but it is what it is I guess. Nothing I can do about it unfortunately.

I reset the adaptions on mine after I’d done the solenoids, after reading online it appears that might have been my downfall. 🙄

On this new box I’m going to replace the bridge seal, the 4 dowel seals and the sump before I fit it I think. Then I’m going to leave the adaptions well alone!

After you reset the adaptions, did you go through the somewhat lengthy process of getting the gearbox to relearn the adaptions? I had reset adaptions on my 3.0 D4's 6HP28 many times to overcome delayed take-offs caused by light throttle driving without doing a relearn.
