L322 3.6 TD V8 V 4.4 TD V8

I currently own a 3.6 TD V8 and I've done a lot of work to it and enjoy it.

What I'd like to know is the main differences between the 3.6 & 4.4?

Thanks in advance!

My current L322 4.4 was the first of the test drives of four RRs (3-years ago now) of all the engine sizes at the gaff I bought her from. We even tried a mini RR but our 6-foot in height heads kept popping through the roof. Even the misses' eyes lit up when we powered off up the road in the westy - but we both had glum faces when we tried the other RRs as they felt as if they had had the smooth running and power output removed completely. The 4.4 had no comparison in our innocent eyes. Wink

The 8 speed gearbox is awesome, especially linked to the torque monster that is the 4.4 TDV8.

I suppose you need to drive a couple to compare yourself.

I’ve never owned the 3.6, but driven a couple when it first came out, so it’s a bit long ago for me to remember exactly.

We went from a 3.6 Vogue SE to a 4.4 Autobiography.

It was a while ago now right enough but I'm sure the 4.4 is quieter in the cabin. The 8 speed box on the 4.4 is utterly superb too.

It's quicker, quieter and smoother then the 3.6 and uses less fuel Very Happy what's not to like? Very Happy Over 30mpg is easily achievable from the 4.4 too if you're nice to it on a run.

The interior on the 4.4 feels a bit more modern too with the TFT screen (although that was on late 3.6's too) and the rotary gear selector.

If you do change from a 3.6 to a 4.4, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I owned both a 3.6 and 4.4 at the same time for about 18 months and my view is that the 4.4 is undeniably a "better" car in many many ways particularly on paper.
However I found that I did almost twice as many miles in the 3.6 than the 4.4 and never felt that I would rather have been in the 4.4.
Once the 4.4 is past the new toy phase and is simply a means of transport only you will be able to decided if the extra spend was worth it. Personally if your 3.6 is well sorted and you like it I would get some use out of it.

Suppose it all comes down to “cost to change” against benefit gained.

I went from a TD6, so benefit was massive..... but so was the cost 🤣.

Thanks for all the replies.

It makes sense to go up for sure but supply of the 4.4 in the L322 isn't that plentiful here in Ireland.

My 3.6 is a 2010 so I will see what I can get for it vs the 4.4

I like doing the work to a new vehicle so I'm nearly at the end of that list on the L322 after 2 months of ownership Smile

Is there any reason you are looking to move on after just 2 months?

None at all!

I always just keep things a short while. I have the attitude that life is short so why not try to own as many cars & jeeps as possible. That said I've got an RS2 and a B5 RS4 which won't be sold in my lifetime.

Sounds like expensive itching to me….I have had 4 Range Rovers in the last 30+ years and have no intention of parting with number 4, my 4.4 tdV8 VSE. until they get banned from the roads or taxed beyond my ability to run it.

Oh it is by no means a cheap exercise but I try to buy wisely etc.

The one thing I've learned from getting in an out of different cars & jeeps is don't sell to family or friends!

Glad to hear you like your 4.4 TD V8 that much it says a lot, thanks

By the way the cost is very different in Ireland vs the UK.

Example of 2010:

Don't forget that the TDV8 4.4 actually came out towards the end of 2010 so people often ignore 2010 when looking for the 4.4 so there are some bargains to be had.

Looking at those prices is it not cheaper to import from the UK?
