I have a 2006, and to do that I think I would have to be a magician. At the risk of sticking my oar in -

As for axle stands - the following will see you safely through a job, and ease your fears

Buy good quality units

Correct rating for weight - as described on here 6 tonne may seem big, but have a good large ground support area, and generally higher lift

Place stands under correct points, see some of the photos of posts on here where people have posted repair / work photos if you are unsure as to placement

Stick the wheel you remove under that side of the car, leave jack in place ( locked) with weight on axle stands

Ensure you are on a level surface and if the ground is not very hard, ie thin tarmac, use a hefty pieces of wood under the stand(s) / jack

I use two axle stands where one would be adequate, as an extra safety measure.

It goes without saying, NEVER work on a car when only on the jack

Always carry out correct procedure to stop the car suspension lowering during work, I always allow extra height for this so if it drop on the bags, it will still be safe underneath.

Apologise if this is 'Teaching granny to suck eggs' it's all about practice and confidence. You could practice with the TVR, it must be light as a feather

Thanks Merchy - that’s the exact same procedure I used to follow when working under the TVR, but I doubt if my 2 tonne jack and axle stands would be man enough for the RR. Maybe it's time to invest in some new shiny tools, just do it quietly so the boss doesn't see all the new gear

As I said, it's all about confidence in the gear and your skills. A while back we had to stand under a suspended marine diesel crankshaft, to carry out final inspections and cleaning prior to lowering the crankshaft into the bed plate, so we had to have confidence in the lifting gear, as the crank shaft we worked under weighed 145 tonnes.

Much safer to take the wheel off than leave it on, you stand more chance of getting injured with the vehicle supported just by the airbags, if one goes pop, the system decides to lower, you knock off a pipe, etc with your hands in and around the wheel I hate to think what injuries you would get but you would find out who your real friends are the next time you need the toilet...!!!

If you have an IID tool, empty the suspension of all air and see how low it goes...!!!

Jack it up, use decent stands, give it a good shove equivalent to you falling against the car and check it doesn't move....  Pete

Good advice Haylands, I usually drop mine to access level prior to any work, I have an I-carsoft LR reader, but the more I read, the more I think I will be better off biting the bullet and getting the Gap tool

RR2B - Yes, sulzer / wartsila, the one we did was a sulzer RTA, now modified to become the Wartsila Flex camless engine, my pics are very dark and grainy, so not much good, but I am looking for the photos I took with the A frame being lowered and we were under it applying sealant to the top of the bed plate. It was a fingers crossed moment.
